Puerto Vallarta. What does the name Banderas Bay mean?
Bahía de Banderas is a natural bay in Mexico located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, between the states of Jalisco and Nayarit, and gives its name to one of the municipalities of Nayarit, Bahía de Banderas. One of the deepest bays in the world.
Who discovered Bahía de Banderas?
Francisco Cortes of Buenaventura It was in the year 1525 that Francisco Cortés de Buenaventura, a relative of the conqueror, arrived on these shores, near a town called Tintoc.
Bahia de Banderas got its name from what Spanish explorers encountered in this region. But to begin, these explorers were first drawn to this area by legends of abundant gold and of female warriors who were ruling this beautiful land. And apparently, the natives greeted the arriving Spaniards covered with colorful plumage. Also, various sources state that these initial encounters were friendly.
Why is it called Puerto Vallarta and Bahia of Banderas
According to Spanish scribes, in the year 1525, there was a violent encounter. As documented by historian Juan Manuel Gomez Encarnación, when the explorers arrived under the command of Francisco Cortés, the young nephew of Hernan Cortés, the natives came out to battle. And, they carried flags made from colorful feathers, similar to the plumage worn during previous visits. But this time, they were armed with quivers filled with arrows, ready to defend their land.
Of course, the Spanish conquistadors were provoked by this encounter, so they were obliged to fight. Then, they won the battle and took control of the land for the King of Spain. The many wonders of Banderas Bay
First, Banderas Bay doesn’t just appear to be beautiful. It’s actually officially beautiful, according to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Also, the coastline is a a beach-lovers mecca. And, from December through April, observers get to see the splendor and grace of humpback whales searching for peaceful locations to give birth. Finally, sea turtles spring to life on the sea and on the beach, from July through December.
Of course, there’s more, much more, to this spectacular location. From the Sea of Cortez to the booming port city or Puerto Vallarta, Banderas Bay is a MUST SEE destination. Historical review
The name of Puerto Vallarta is in honor of Lic. Ignacio L. Vallarta, notable Jalisco jurist and former governor of the State.
The oldest archaeological remains that have been found in Puerto Vallarta – to date – come from the site called “La Pedrera” on Costa Rica Street, in the Lázaro Cárdenas neighborhood. The first settlements were probably established around 300 BC. in the Middle Preclassic. A thousand years later the people of Aztatlán arrived in the Early Post Classic and it was finally inhabited by groups of the Banderas culture in the Late Post-Classic. This culture was what the Spanish found when they arrived in the Valley.
Lieutenant Lázaro Blanco in his Compostela Report, written in 1584, comments that the natives called this Valley “Xihutla” which means “place where grass grows”. Captain Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura was the conqueror of this region. The chroniclers narrate that when he arrived at the town of Tintoque, more than twenty thousand armed Indians were waiting for him at the entrance, carrying a feather flag in their hand and another in their quiver.
The Spanish brought four royal banners and one of red damask with an image of La Purísima in front and a cross on the back. Seeing so many enemies, the friar who came with them knelt to ask for divine help and immediately, the banner of Damascus was filled with brilliance, instilling courage in the soldiers and fear in the Indians who surrendered, leaving at the feet of the father their little flags and their weapons. This happened in March 1525, and for this reason, the Spanish gave the Valley the name “Banderas” which it retains to this day.
Puerto Vallarta previously called “Las Peñas”, “Peñitas” and, probably in more distant years “El Carrizal”, was founded in the independent era on December 12, 1851, by Guadalupe Sánchez Torres, his wife Ambrosia Carrillo and some friends such as Cenobio Joya; Apolonio de Robles; Cleofas Peña and Martín Andrade -among others-, who gave it the name “Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe” because that day was dedicated to the virgin.
On October 31, 1886, Las Peñas police station in the municipality of Talpa was established as the political and judicial police station, by Decree No. 210 of the H. State Congress.
By decree number 305 of the H. State Congress, of May 2, 1888, the Las Peñas police station is annexed to the municipality of San Sebastián.y is it called Bay of Banderas and Puerto Vallarta.
On May 31, 1918, the Las Peñas police station was elevated to the category of Municipality by decree number 1889 of the H. State Congress. When changing political category, the Las Peñas police station received the name of the municipality of Puerto Vallarta, at the request of deputy Dr. Marcos Guzmán. The referred decree was published on June 5, 1918.
On May 31, 1968, the town of Puerto Vallarta was elevated to the category of city by decree number 8366 of the H. State Congress, upon celebrating its 50th Anniversary as a municipality.
Currently, the city of Puerto Vallarta continues to be the municipal seat.
How many beaches are there in Bahía de Banderas?
It is home to more than 40 beaches that captivate with their unmatched beauty. Activities for the whole family, including diving, surfing, kite-surfing, contemplating flora and fauna and practicing extreme sports.
At more than 900 meters deep (3.000 feet), Banderas Bay is one of the deepest bays in the world. It is also 42 kilometers wide from point to point, placing it among the 10 largest bays in the world and easily the largest bay in Mexico.

La Versalles, the Trendiest Neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta
Buying vs Renting: Real Estate Options in Puerto Vallarta – Riviera Nayarit.Armando Contreras – Galvan Real Estate and Services
Embarking on a real estate journey in the captivating region of Riviera Nayarit is a thrilling endeavor for expats seeking a slice of paradise in Mexico.
Whether you’re envisioning a dream vacation home, a retirement sanctuary, or an investment opportunity, understanding the nuances between buying and renting can significantly impact your experience and financial outlook.
In this article, we’ll delve into the advantages and disadvantages of each option, empowering you to make informed decisions tailored to your unique needs and aspirations.
Buying vs Renting: Real Estate Options in Puerto Vallarta – Riviera Nayarit
Advantages of Buying
Long-Term Investment
Purchasing real estate in Riviera Nayarit can serve as a long-term investment strategy, offering potential appreciation in property value over time. For expats looking to preserve and grow their wealth, real estate ownership can be a prudent financial move.
Personalization and Stability
Owning a property allows you the freedom to customize your living space according to your preferences, creating a personalized oasis that reflects your lifestyle. Additionally, home ownership provides stability and a sense of rootedness in the community, especially for those considering Retirement or extended stays.
Rental Income Potential
Many expats choose to buy properties not only for personal use but also as rental units to generate supplemental income. With the booming tourism and expat population in Riviera Nayarit, renting out your property can be a lucrative venture, offsetting ownership costs.
Buying vs Renting: Real Estate Options in Puerto Vallarta – Riviera Nayarit
Disadvantages of Buying
Upfront Costs and Responsibilities
Acquiring property involves substantial upfront costs such as down payments, closing fees, and ongoing maintenance expenses. Additionally, homeowners are responsible for repairs, property taxes, and HOA fees, which can add to the overall financial commitment.
Market Volatility
Real estate markets can experience fluctuations in value due to economic factors or shifts in local demand. While Riviera Nayarit has seen consistent growth, it’s essential to consider the potential risks associated with market volatility when investing in property.
Liquidity Constraints
Compared to liquid assets like stocks or bonds, real estate is relatively non-liquid. Selling a property may take time, especially during market downturns, impacting your ability to access funds quickly if needed.
Advantages of Renting
Flexibility and Lower Initial Costs
Renting offers flexibility, allowing you to explore different neighborhoods or property types without a long-term commitment. Initial costs such as security deposits and monthly rent payments are typically lower than purchasing a property, providing immediate cost savings.
Maintenance and Hassle-Free Living
Renters are not responsible for major maintenance costs or property repairs, as these are typically the landlord’s obligations. This hassle-free living arrangement can be appealing for expats seeking a carefree lifestyle without the responsibilities of home ownership.
Opportunity for Location Testing
Renting allows you to test different areas within Riviera Nayarit before committing to a specific location for long-term living or investment. This firsthand experience can help you make more informed decisions about where you ultimately want to settle.
Renters have limited control over property modifications or renovations, depending on lease agreements. This lack of customization can be a drawback for individuals looking to personalize their living spaces according to their preferences.
No Equity Building
Unlike homeowners who build equity as they pay down mortgages, renters do not accumulate equity in the properties they occupy. For long-term wealth-building strategies, this absence of equity growth may be a disadvantage.
Rental Market Dynamics
Rental markets can fluctuate, leading to potential rent increases or changes in lease terms upon renewal. These uncertainties can impact long-term budgeting and financial planning for expats renting in Riviera Nayarit.
Partnering With Local Professionals
Regardless of whether you’re considering buying or renting in Riviera Nayarit, partnering with a reputable local real estate broker like Galvan Real Estate & Services is crucial for a seamless and successful experience. Puerto Vallarta Destination for Digital Nomads. The Travel Off Path site ranked this destination as one of the best cities in Mexico in 2024 for this niche.
Those who have visited Puerto Vallarta know that it is a place with great magnetism. After seeing it, a large number of visitors feel that it is a city where they could live happily, and many who have the possibility of doing so make it their home.
Such is the case of expats, a term used to refer to North American foreigners – mostly retired – who decide to leave their country to reside in other countries. Puerto Vallarta is home to many retired Americans and Canadians, either permanently or at least for a few months of the year.

Travel Off Path is the world’s leading independent travel news source, providing current and relevant news for travelers. Their writers are a team of expats, digital nomads and avid travelers, creating relevant and useful content for other travelers.
They are the ones who, after traveling the world, identified Puerto Vallarta as a fashionable destination for digital nomads. Located on the Mexican Pacific coast, this tourist city is a perfect mix of tradition and modernity. The cobblestone streets and typical architecture of the old neighborhoods merge with first-class hotel areas.
In addition to hotels aimed at business tourism, such as Mío, One and Holiday Inn Express, where everything is designed to be able to vacation and work at the same time, there are many tourist complexes that have facilities dedicated to coworking, high-speed internet and a extraordinary room service.
In relation to this recognition, Luis Villaseñor, director of the city’s Tourism Promotion Office, commented: “Puerto Vallarta is not only a sun and beach destination. It also has areas to walk within the city – such as its luxurious marina and the famous boardwalk, where restaurants, bars, boutiques, jewelry stores, spas, etc. are concentrated -, shopping centers, supermarkets, gyms, yoga studios, cinemas and everything necessary for modern life.

Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024 #3 Mexico, how about Puerto Vallarta?
Natural beauty, high percentage of English speaking locals, thriving happy expat community and activities, warm, gourmet gastronomy friendly culture, mixed nature environment of mountains and ocean, and much more.

Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024
Mexico is a top-rated country to retire to for many reasons. Lifestyle, culture, warmth of its people, and affordability without losing luxury. Yes, that’s right, I said luxury. Because the cost of living is lower, you can afford a little more luxury in your life, and Mexico has plenty on offer. Here’s a couple of examples.
Wine is one of the great loves of my life, so let me share this little secret with you. Mexico’s wine industry is one of the best in the world. This year, the Cenzontle Blanco 2019 took out the best wine in the world (in that class) during a blind tasting by 320 judges from around the world at the 2023 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB) in Europe. In fact, 85 Mexican wines won medals, so you don’t need to go to France or Italy to enjoy sensational wine. It’s right here in Mexico.

Food is the other great love of my life. For a foodie like me, I’ve found everything here fresh, delicious, and very well-priced. I’m talking street food through to top restaurants with a la carte menus. The gastronomy scene in most major tourist spots, which coincidentally also tend to be expat havens, is where you’ll find five-star-rated chefs specializing in just about every cuisine from around the world. Chefs like world-renowned Jonathon Gómez Luna, who has restaurants in Cancún, up north in Valle de Guadalupe (wine country), and in Playa del Carmen. It’s no joke; he trained in not one but two of the world’s Top 50 Restaurants.
So, if you thought Mexico was lacking in any way then prepared to be pleasantly surprised. It’s not all tequila shots on the beach sitting in a swing seat overlooking the ocean. Well, not unless you want it to be.

Beaches are great, but there is something for everyone. If you are a mountains and hiking kind of person, there are several beautiful places to call home, like Lake Chapala or San Miguel de Allende in the central parts of Mexico. Both have large expat communities living in heritage cities full of Spanish colonial architecture and a more culture-filled lifestyle. Lake Chapala has the largest and oldest expat community, while San Miguel de Allende is famous for its art, culture, and creative vibe.

Every environment can be found in Mexico. There are beautiful deserts, green rolling hills, volcanos, national parks, laid-back beach towns, and thriving metropolis cities. So, however you envision your retirement, you will find it in Mexico.
The great news is that property prices are a lot lower, too. With beach side condos, houses, villas, or a little house in the jungle all being affordable options depending on your lifestyle choice and budget.

Even in major hotspots like the Riviera Maya, you can pick up a brand-new condo in the low $200,000’s. Lower if you move away from the beach. It’s the same on the other side of the country in beach destinations like Baja or Puerto Vallarta. Just moving a little away from the beach in Puerto Vallarta, you will still have a beach view as you move up the mountain behind, but prices drop, so it’s worth a scouting trip to talk to other expats and find out the best places to buy.

Another great thing about Mexico is the low cost of healthcare. Even top specialists are very affordable. Let me share my own personal experience.
At the beginning of the year, I had a bicycle accident and was rushed to the E.R of the best hospital here on Cozumel. An entire day in the E.R, plus an orthopedic surgeon, two E.R nurses, x-rays, drugs, my own specialist anesthetist (needed because I have blood clotting issues), along with the bedside procedure to put my arm back in place, and the whole day being fussed over in the E.R cost me a mere $5,500 pesos. That’s $320.

All staff were English-speaking, very attentive, professional, and with the latest medical machines and gizmos. So, as you can see, healthcare and emergency care in Mexico are affordable for every budget.
Funnily enough, the most commented-about thing I hear from other expats is how they don’t need as many medications anymore. Due to the warmer weather, healthier lifestyle, cleaner eating, and reduced stress, most expats are healthier than they’ve been in years. When your dollar stretches a lot further, it means you can enjoy life to its fullest. I do.
Travel again, and get lost in the heritage, culture, and warm community of the Mexican people around you. It’s my favorite thing about living in Mexico. The Mexican culture revolves around family and friends. They are extremely polite, and it’s common to hear que la vía bien, which is a little blessing, meaning safe travels, they say when you are leaving. The old ladies and gentlemen who pack groceries at my local supermarket say this to me daily with a warm smile every time I go through the checkout. It’s lovely.
Far from lazy, most Mexicans I know work six days a week, which is why their only day off is usually spent with family. Enjoying good food and quality time with the people they love. So, when you live here and are lucky enough to be included in their circle of friends, you will enjoy the warmth of its people and many an amazing meal surrounded with laughter and most likely an abuela’s (grandmother’s) hugs.
Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024
Our focus is on the destinations that make sense for an overseas retirement—the established expat hubs with a track record for comfortable living. For instance, Roatán is the only place in Honduras we would consider in our ranking, while in Mexico there are easily a half-a-dozen hotspots we’ve homed in on. Each place is then assessed in the following ways:
Housing
This category looks first at the ease of buying and owning property as a foreigner, then the value you’ll receive as a homeowner. We consider factors like the price of housing in expat-friendly locations, and property taxes.
Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024
We also examine rental values. In many destinations, renting makes better financial sense than buying. We look at long-term leases, the cost of renting a two-bedroom, 900-square-foot furnished apartment in a mid-range area, and whether renters’ rights are well protected by law.
Visas and Benefits
A place isn’t much good as a retirement destination if you can’t live there easily. We begin with an analysis of available tourist visas: how fast/simple it is to obtain a tourist visa, the ease of exploring a country on a tourist visa, the length of a tourist visa, etc.
Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024
Just a few months ago, Costa Rica began issuing 180-day tourist visas as standard. That’s almost six months’ worth of hassle-free time in-country, and more than enough time to escape the ravages of the North American winter. For retirees who live overseas part-time, that’s plenty.
But we also investigate the legalities of extending a stay, the ease of becoming a permanent resident, and the availability of special retiree options. We additionally consider retiree benefits and discounts on healthcare, prescription medication, entertainment, eating out, travel, utilities, and local transport.
Cost of Living
Each of our contributors answers an extensive cost-of-living questionnaire, tailored to the needs and wants of an expat retiree, from the cost of rent and utilities to groceries to a flight home to visit family in North America. The lower the cost of living, the higher the score.
Affinity Rating
Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024
This one is where gut feeling comes in. We pride ourselves on being systematic in the way we put the Index together—but the truth is, retiring in a new destination involves the heart as well as the head. So, we ask our experts to rank our destinations according to whether they’d be happy to move there. What’s more, we ask you—our readers—where you would like to move.
For example, how easy will it be to make friends? We find out by evaluating the size and character of the expat community, the number of clubs and activities, and whether or not English is widely spoken. We also rate the range and variety of restaurants, the ease of finding an English-language movie, a concert, a world-class sporting event… essentially, the ability for you to have a thriving social life as an overseas retiree.
Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024
Healthcare
We assess healthcare based on both quality and cost. Many of the world’s best retirement destinations—and all of those included in the Index—you’ll find world-class care far cheaper than back home.
Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024
This year’s winner, Costa Rica, is more expensive than other destinations, but healthcare costs are still lower than you’d imagine. Debbie Crowley, a retiree who moved to Tamarindo in 2021, reports that she paid just $187 for an MRI scan at a nearby facility. She received her results in-hand there and then, and was able to hand-deliver them to her local doctor herself—saving time and expense while enjoying the personal, dignified treatment that seems ever rarer in North America.
If the roads are good and clean, the public transport excellent, and the internet fast and reliable, then a place will rank highly. We additionally factor in whether your new home offers a stable political environment, well-maintained infrastructure, and an efficient banking system.
Climate
This is our “Goldilocks” category. For some folks the perfect climate is hot and humid, others want spring year round… So, how do we score somewhere like Roatán—a small Caribbean island with a tropical climate—next to, say, Ireland? Apples to oranges, right?
Mexico 3rd best place in the world for retirement in 2024
We score a destination based on how many different climate options it offers. Ecuador’s landscape ranges from permanent snowfields, to cool mountain retreats, to tropical rainforest, to arid coastal plains reminiscent of southern California.
We provide information and resources for visitors to Puerto Vallarta, areas of The Riviera Nayarit and other destinations in both states of Jalisco and Nayarit . You will find variety of content, including articles, blog posts, videos, photos, descriptions and interviews, all of which are designed to help visitors plan their trip, including attractions, restaurants, and events. https://promovisionpv.com/
