Learn all About the Raicilla Beverage

0
Raicilla Jalisco

Learn all About the Raicilla Beverage. Raicilla is one of the most traditional alcoholic beverages of western Mexico and is deeply tied to the culture of Jalisco, especially the mountains and coastal regions around Puerto Vallarta, San Sebastián del Oeste, Mascota, and El Tuito. It is an artisanal distilled spirit made from agave, similar to tequila and mezcal, but with its own production methods, flavors, and history.

Below is a clear explanation of what raicilla is, where it comes from, and why it is culturally important.

What Raicilla Is

Raicilla is a traditional agave distillate produced mainly in western Jalisco and a small part of Nayarit. It is made by fermenting and distilling the piña (heart) of agave plants.

Alcohol content: usually 40–50% ABV
Raw material: wild or semi-cultivated agave species
Production: small artisanal distilleries called “tabernas”

The name “raicilla” means “little root.” Some historians say the name was used during colonial times to disguise the drink and avoid taxes on mezcal production.

Origin and History

Raicilla has at least 300 years of history in Jalisco.

Colonial era

Indigenous people already fermented agave before the Spanish arrived.
Spanish colonists introduced distillation techniques, creating agave spirits.

Illegal “moonshine” period

For centuries raicilla was produced secretly in mountain villages.

Reasons:
Colonial taxes on alcohol
Government restrictions
Remote mountain communities

This earned it the nickname “Mexican moonshine.”

What is Raicilla? Jalisco Denomination of Origin Drink. Travel Video Puerto Vallarta https://promovisionpv.com/what-is-raicilla-jalisco-denomination-of-origin-drink-travel-video-puerto-vallarta/

Modern recognition

In 2019, the Mexican government granted raicilla Denomination of Origin (DO) protection.

Authentic raicilla can now legally be produced only in:

6 municipalities of Jalisco
1 municipality in Nayarit

Where Raicilla Is Produced

Two main production regions exist in Jalisco:

1- Sierra (mountain raicilla)

Typical areas:
San Sebastián del Oeste
Mascota
Talpa de Allende

Characteristics:
Earthy
Herbal
Complex

2- Costa (coastal raicilla)

Typical areas:
Cabo Corrientes
Puerto Vallarta
Tomatlán

Characteristics:
Fruity
Floral
Slightly salty or tropical

The flavor differences come from climate, agave species, and fermentation methods.

Agave Varieties Used

Unlike tequila (which uses only blue agave), raicilla can use several agave species.

Common varieties include:
Agave maximiliana
Agave angustifolia
Agave inaequidens
Agave rhodacantha

These agaves often grow wild in forests or mountains, contributing to complex flavors.

Traditional Production Process

Raicilla is usually made with very traditional methods.

1- Harvesting

Agave plants mature 8–15 years before harvest.

2- Cooking

The agave hearts are roasted in:
clay ovens
underground pits
wood-fired stone ovens

3- Crushing

Traditionally:
machetes
wooden mallets

4- Fermentation

Wild yeast fermentation in:
wood vats
masonry tanks

5- Distillation

Often distilled in:
copper pot stills
Filipino-style stills (wood and copper design)

About 10 kg of agave are needed to produce 1 liter of raicilla.

Flavor Profile

Raicilla is famous for being aromatic and complex.

Common tasting notes include:
floral
tropical fruit
green pepper
melon
mineral
mild smoke

Because of its artisanal nature, raicilla production is usually small scale, often only a few thousand liters annually.

Cultural Importance

Raicilla is more than a drink—it represents:
rural mountain culture
family distilling traditions
agave agriculture
regional identity in western Jalisco

In recent years it has become popular with craft-spirit enthusiasts and is increasingly featured in bars and tasting tours around Puerto Vallarta.

In simple terms:
Raicilla is Jalisco’s traditional wild agave spirit, older and more rustic than tequila, produced in small mountain and coastal communities and now gaining global recognition.

The Wild Mexican Dream Creatures Alebrijes: The Wild Mexican Dream Creatures You Won’t Believe Exist! – Shazel Puerto Vallarta

While visiting Puerto Vallarta, we discovered the incredible world of Alebrijes at Shazel — the wildly colorful Mexican folk art creatures that combine animals, imagination, and tradition.

The Wild Mexican Dream Creatures: Alebrijes

These amazing sculptures trace back to artist Pedro Linares, who dreamed of strange animals shouting the word “Alebrijes!” while he was sick in the 1930s. After recovering, he brought these creatures to life using papier-mâché, creating one of Mexico’s most unique art forms.

Today, artisans across Mexico — especially in Oaxaca — carve and paint these fantastical creatures with stunning detail and vibrant colors.

In this video we explore these fascinating pieces of Mexican culture and the story behind their magical origin.

The Wild Mexican Dream Creatures: Alebrijes

If you love travel, art, and discovering unique cultural traditions, you’ll enjoy this look into one of Mexico’s most imaginative creations.

The Cool Story Behind Alebrijes

The origin of alebrijes is actually a wild dream story.

In the 1930s, a Mexican artist named Pedro Linares from Mexico City became very ill and reportedly fell into a deep fever dream. In that dream he found himself in a strange, colorful forest filled with bizarre creatures.

The Wild Mexican Dream Creatures: Alebrijes
The Wild Mexican Dream Creatures: Alebrijes

These animals were unlike anything he had ever seen — a donkey with butterfly wings, a lion with an eagle head, a rooster with horns, and many other strange hybrids. The creatures were brightly colored and patterned, and they kept shouting a mysterious word over and over:

“¡Alebrijes! ¡Alebrijes! ¡Alebrijes!”

When Linares recovered from his illness, he couldn’t get the creatures out of his mind. Using the traditional Mexican papier-mâché craft known as cartonería, he began sculpting the strange dream animals exactly as he remembered them.

People were fascinated. Soon his fantastical creatures became famous throughout Mexico.

Later, artisans in Oaxaca began carving their own versions out of wood and painting them with incredibly detailed patterns and bright colors. Today these carved figures are some of the most iconic folk art pieces in Mexico and are celebrated around the world.

Alebrijes even became internationally famous after appearing in the Disney/Pixar film Coco, where they are portrayed as colorful spirit guides.

While most travelers visit Puerto Vallarta for its beaches and vibrant nightlife, the city is also one of the most important art destinations on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Over the past fifty years, Puerto Vallarta has evolved into a thriving cultural center where contemporary Mexican art, international artists, and indigenous traditions meet.

For travelers interested in culture, exploring the city’s art galleries, sculpture collections, and indigenous artwork is one of the most rewarding experiences in this beautiful coastal destination.

The Influence of Mexican Artists in Puerto Vallarta

Several prominent artists helped shape the city’s artistic identity. One of the most famous is Manuel Lepe Macedo, a Puerto Vallarta painter known for his colorful naïve-style works depicting the town’s traditional houses, churches, and landscapes.

His paintings captured the charm of the small fishing village that Puerto Vallarta once was, and his artwork was exhibited internationally, bringing global attention to the region’s artistic heritage.

Outdoor Sculpture Along the Malecón

Beyond the galleries, Puerto Vallarta also features an impressive outdoor sculpture collection along the city’s oceanfront promenade, the Malecón Puerto Vallarta.

This seaside walkway functions as an open-air museum displaying dramatic bronze sculptures by Mexican artists such as:
Sergio Bustamante
Alejandro Colunga
Ramiz Barquet

Visitors strolling along the Malecón encounter surreal bronze chairs, whimsical figures, and romantic sculptures overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Why Puerto Vallarta Became an Art Destination

Three key factors helped transform Puerto Vallarta into a major cultural hub:

  • International artists settling in the city
  • Strong indigenous craft traditions from nearby regions
  • Tourism supporting galleries and exhibitions

As a result, today Puerto Vallarta offers one of the most diverse art scenes in Mexico.

Discover the Artistic Side of Puerto Vallarta

For travelers who want to experience more than beaches and nightlife, exploring Puerto Vallarta’s art galleries and indigenous artwork provides a deeper understanding of the region’s culture.

From Huichol beadwork to contemporary sculpture and historic paintings, the city’s creative spirit can be found everywhere — from quiet gallery spaces to the lively oceanfront Malecón.

Whether you are an art collector, cultural traveler, or simply curious visitor, the art scene of Puerto Vallarta is one of the city’s most inspiring discoveries.

How to Use the Puerto Vallarta Bus System and other transportation ( Tourist Guide + Routes Map)

Altough much of this information will still be implemented for a long while: This information is subjet to change as new buses are entering in service and the schedule may change. This site will up date as frequently as new informarion comes available. Follow this page for moe updates.

Determining bus routes in Puerto Vallarta is a little different from many cities because the system is informal. There is not a single official map posted everywhere. Instead, locals rely on destination signs on the bus, main highway routes, and apps like Google Maps. Here are the practical ways to figure out the routes.

Leaving Old Vallarta Zona Romantica & going to Walmart in front of the Marina Terminal.
Ranchito, Mojoneras, Ixtapa B, Marina-Las Juntas, (these buses will go inland (Pitillal) at the Marina Terminal: Portales, Loma Bonita, Demonio Blanco, Magistario)

Leaving Old Vallarta Zon Romatica & going to Costco (Macro Plaza-Pitilal) : San Esteban, Infonvit, Banus, Villa Guadalupe. (versalles will be passing close but it is a long detour route)

Somo of those buses have a cycle from witch they will go via by downtown and the other via tunnel. (different deparure location) To add to confuson

Understanding how transportation works before your trip will help you save money, avoid confusion, and discover some of the most beautiful places along Mexico’s Pacific coast.

1- Look at the Destination on the Bus Windshield

Most buses display their destination or main stop on the front windshield, usually in large letters.

Puerto Vallarta Bus System

Common examples you will see:
Centro → Downtown / Malecón
Túnel → Romantic Zone via the highway tunnel
Marina Vallarta → Marina area
Mismaloya / Boca → South beaches like Boca de Tomatlán
Walmart / Sam’s → Transfer point for buses going north
Sayulita / Punta Mita / Bucerías → Riviera Nayarit towns

Busses to Riviera Nayarit: Nuevo Nayarit, Bucerias, Sayulita, San Pancho, Lo de Marcos, Rincon de Guayabitos

In Puerto Vallarta, the destination name is usually more important than the route number, and locals simply wait for the bus with the right place written on it.

2- Use Google Maps Transit

Google Maps actually works surprisingly well for Vallarta buses.

https://www.google.com/maps/search/Transit+stations/@20.6030948,-105.2331744,17.5z?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDMwNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

Steps:

  1. Open Google Maps
  2. Enter your destination (example: “Malecón Puerto Vallarta”)
  3. Tap Directions
  4. Select the Transit / Bus icon

Google Maps will show:
Which bus to take
Transfer points
Estimated travel time

This is one of the easiest ways for visitors to determine routes.

3- Understand the Main Bus Corridors

Most buses follow Highway 200 (Carretera 200), the main road through Puerto Vallarta.

Key travel directions:

Northbound from depature in Zona Romantica (toward Riviera Nayarit)
Marina Vallarta
Nuevo Vallarta
Bucerías
La Cruz
Punta Mita
Sayulita

Southbound from depature in Zona Romantica (toward jungle beaches)
Conchas Chinas
Mismaloya
Boca de Tomatlán

Puerto Vallarta Bus System

These routes generally pass through Centro and the Hotel Zone, making transfers easy.

4- Know the Main Routes Used by Locals

The Vallarta bus system basically runs on several major lines such as:
Marina Vallarta
Aurora / Portales
Ramblases
Mojoneras
Joyas del Pedregal
Nuevo Vallarta
Mismaloya

Most buses pass through the central highway, so you can catch them from many stops along the route.

5- Major Transfer Point Tourists Use

One of the most useful bus hubs is:

Walmart / Sam’s Club bus stop (near the cruise terminal)

Puerto Vallarta Bus System
Puerto Vallarta Bus System

From here you can transfer to buses going north to:
Nuevo Vallarta
Bucerías
Sayulita
Punta Mita

Typically you:
1- Take a city bus there
2- Switch to a Riviera Nayarit regional bus.

  1. Typical Bus Costs

Approximate fares:
Puerto Vallarta City routes: ~10 MXN
Nuevo Vallarta: ~35 MXN
Sayulita: ~45–65 MXN

You must pay cash when boarding and there are no transfers, so each ride is a separate fare.

7- Look for the Blue “PARADA” Bus Stop Sign

Official stops are marked PARADA. However, buses may also stop along the route if passengers signal the driver.

Quick local trick:
If you’re unsure, simply ask the driver:
“¿Va al centro?” (Does this go to downtown?)
or
¿Pasa por ?” (Does it pass by ?)

Puerto Vallarta Transportation Guide: How to Get Around the City and Riviera Nayarit

Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s most walkable and visitor-friendly destinations, but knowing how transportation works can make your trip significantly easier and cheaper. Whether you’re traveling between beaches, exploring downtown, or planning day trips along the Riviera Nayarit coast, this complete Puerto Vallarta transportation guide explains every option available to tourists.

From affordable public buses to taxis, ride-sharing services, rental cars, and water taxis, travelers have several ways to explore the region. Understanding these transportation options will help you move around Puerto Vallarta efficiently while saving money and discovering areas many visitors miss.

Getting from Puerto Vallarta Airport to Your Hotel

Most visitors arrive through Puerto Vallarta’s international airport located just north of the city center. Once you land, you have several options to reach your hotel.

Taxi from the airport

Airport taxis are available outside the arrivals area. They are safe and regulated but more expensive than other options.

Typical fares:
Marina Vallarta: $15–20 USD
Hotel Zone: $18–25 USD
Downtown: $25–30 USD
Romantic Zone: $30–35 USD

Uber and ride-share

Uber operates in Puerto Vallarta, but pickups must occur outside the airport property. Travelers typically walk across the pedestrian bridge outside the airport to request a ride.

Uber rides are usually 20–40% cheaper than taxis.

Public bus from the airport

Budget travelers often use the city bus. After exiting the airport, cross the pedestrian bridge to the highway and catch a bus marked:
Centro
Tunel
Romantic Zone

Cost: about 10 pesos (roughly $0.50 USD).

About Tamales Mexican Cuisine Puerto Vallarta https://promovisionpv.com/about-tamales-mexican-cuisine-puerto-vallarta/

Because the region sits on Banderas Bay, seafood plays a major role in local cuisine. Fresh fish, shrimp, octopus, and oysters arrive daily from local fishermen, appearing in everything from ceviche tostadas to sophisticated restaurant dishes.

At the same time, Vallarta maintains deep roots in traditional Mexican food culture, particularly recipes originating in Jalisco. Travelers following a Puerto Vallarta travel guide will quickly notice that meals here are not just about eating—they are about community, family, and celebration.

Must-Try Mexican Food in Puerto Vallarta

No Puerto Vallarta travel guide would be complete without highlighting the dishes visitors must try during their stay. The following classics represent the heart of Mexican food in the region.

Puerto Vallarta — A Food-Lover’s Travel Guide: Mexican Food, Markets, and Must-Try Plates

Puerto Vallarta is a sunlit collision of Pacific waves, cobblestone lanes, and an exuberant culinary scene that tells the story of coastal Mexico. This travel guide is written for the foodie traveler who wants more than resort dining: you want street stalls, market counters, family-run kitchens, and the recipes that locals love. Below you’ll find practical guidance, iconic dishes to order, where to look for authenticity, and quick tips to navigate Puerto Vallarta’s vibrant Mexican food culture.

Why food matters here
Puerto Vallarta’s cuisine is shaped by the sea, Jalisco’s agricultural richness, and centuries of regional technique. The result is Mexican food that ranges from intensely local seafood specialties to celebrated national classics served with a coastal twist. For travelers, eating here is both a cultural primer and the most reliable way to understand daily life.

Where to eat: the local foodscape (street, market, and sit-down)
Authentic experiences cluster in three settings:

Street stalls and taquerías, best for fast, highly local eats like tacos, quesadillas, and tortas. These are where recipes evolve and prices stay low.
Municipal markets and seafood counters, markets are the research lab of Puerto Vallarta food culture: bright produce, whole fish, and ceviche prepared to order. Ask vendors what’s freshest that day.
Family restaurants and fondas — small, unpretentious eateries where a rotating set of home-cooked stews and regional specialties come straight from the cook’s family recipe book.

Must-try Mexican food dishes in Puerto Vallarta
Order these to sample the full range of flavors:

Pescado zarandeado and grilled fish a regional technique of marinating and flame-grilling whole fish; smoky, slightly spicy, and perfect with lime.

Ceviche and coctel de mariscos citrus-cured seafood served with chopped onion, tomato, cilantro, and avocado. Ideal for a midday beach meal.
Tacos de pescado and tacos de camarón Baja-style battered or grilled fish and shrimp tacos with crisp slaw and creamy sauces.
Birria and barbacoa slow-cooked, spice-forward meats served as tacos or with consommé; comforting and popular into the evening.
Pozole and mole (seasonal) traditional, ceremonial dishes that appear in markets and family restaurants around holidays but can be found year-round in better kitchens.
Tamales and pambazos, street-friendly bites showcasing masa, chiles, and regional fillings.

Seafood etiquette and safety tips
Seafood is central to local Mexican food in Puerto Vallarta, but freshness matters. Look for stalls where turnover is high (lots of customers), and for ceviche or coctel prepared to order rather than pre-made all day. When in doubt, choose busy places: volume correlates with turnover and quality.

How to find authentic Mexican food (practical search tips)
Follow the crowds: If a breakfast stall is busy at 8 AM, it’s usually a sign of repeat customers and reliable recipes.

Ask a local taxi driver or market vendor for their favorite fonda — these are often the best leads.
Use daytime market visits: morning is when fish and produce are at their best; after 3 PM selections thin out.
Prioritize family-run places over glossy tourist restaurants when you want authenticity and value.

Puerto Vallarta Mexican Food Travel Guide
Puerto Vallarta Mexican Food Travel Guide

Pairings and local beverages
Agua fresca, fresh fruit waters (hibiscus, tamarind, seasonal fruits) are the everyday refreshers.
Michelada and cold beer, go well with fried seafood.
Mexican coffee and café de olla, spiced, often with cinnamon, for a cozy afternoon.
Tequila and mezcal, try them in small tastings; ask for local recommendations and sip slowly.

Timing and seasonal considerations
Fish varieties shift with season and currents; mahi-mahi and jurel appear at different times than shrimp or sardines. If you want a particular dish, ask vendors what’s “del día” (of the day). Markets in the early morning (7–10 AM) are best for selection; restaurants peak at lunchtime (1–3 PM) and sunset.

Safety, budget, and tipping guidelines
Budget: street tacos and market dishes are very affordable; sit-down meals vary by restaurant class.
Health: choose busy vendors and freshly prepared ceviche; bottled or filtered water is standard for visitors.
Tipping: 10–15% in sit-down restaurants is customary; small change or rounding up is appreciated at stalls.

This Puerto Vallarta travel guide for food lovers reveals the best Mexican food, market tips, and must-try dishes from ceviche to pescado zarandeado.”

Closing — how to use this guide
Use this travel guide as your culinary field notebook: prioritize early market visits, follow local recommendations, and treat every meal as both a discovery and a story. Puerto Vallarta’s Mexican food scene isn’t a single menu it’s a living, changing conversation between fishermen, market vendors, home cooks, and chefs. Listen closely, order boldly, and let the flavors guide your day.
