Estuary Trail: A Hidden Wildlife Oasis in Puerto Vallarta’s Hotel Zone. Most visitors to Puerto Vallarta stick to the beach, the Malecón, or the pool bar, but tucked right inside the hotel zone is a surprisingly wild escape most people never see.
Estuary Trail: A Hidden Wildlife Oasis
The Estuary Trail is a short, easy walk that feels a world away from the resorts surrounding it. Within minutes of stepping onto the trail, the sounds of traffic fade and you are surrounded by mangroves, palms, and still water reflecting the jungle canopy above.
Estuary Trail: A Hidden Wildlife Oasis
On my walk, I spotted huge green iguanas, some lounging along the banks and others climbing high into the trees, keeping a watchful eye on everything below. Near the water’s edge, freshwater turtles basked in the sun, barely moving as I passed. It is quiet, calm, and incredibly peaceful, especially considering you’re right in the heart of the hotel zone.
Estuary Trail: A Hidden Wildlife Oasis
This trail is not about distance or difficulty. It is about slowing down, observing wildlife, and experiencing a side of Puerto Vallarta that most tourists completely miss. If you enjoy nature, photography, birdwatching, or just want a relaxing walk away from the crowds, the Estuary Trail is absolutely worth checking out.
Estuary Trail: A Hidden Wildlife Oasis
It is proof that even in a busy resort town, real nature is still thriving, you just have to know where to look.

Manuel Lepe Macedo. Pioneer of Naïve Art in Puerto Vallarta
Biography and Artistic Significance
Manuel Lepe Native Art in Puerto Vallarta
Manuel Lepe Macedo (April 17, 1936 – September 9, 1984) was a Mexican painter born in Puerto Vallarta who became internationally recognized for his naïve style artwork. He had no formal artistic training, attending only the first four years of primary school, yet developed a distinctive voice in painting that captured the landscapes, traditions, and everyday life of his hometown. His paintings typically featured vibrant, lyrical depictions of Puerto Vallarta, including children, angels, and local scenery, visuals that came to symbolize the town itself as it grew into a prominent tourist destination. Lepe’s body of work exceeds 2,500 paintings and has been exhibited worldwide, including in several U.S. galleries and museums. His art is held in prestigious collections and has been collected by figures such as Queen Elizabeth II and Ronald Reagan. He was honored by Mexican President Luis Echeverría Álvarez in 1976 as a significant national artist and is celebrated locally, including with a Manuel Lepe Day in Puerto Vallarta. Lepe’s contributions were vital in placing Puerto Vallarta on the cultural map; his work helped define a visual identity for the city’s heritage and landscape through art.

His studio was preserved as a gallery and museum in Puerto Vallarta (though some locations have since closed), and his paintings are still widely shown in regional collections, including at the ARTe Vallarta Museo. Murals and public art in Puerto Vallarta incorporate his style, and his influence remains embedded in the city’s visual culture, including maxiletras and urban public artworks.
Marcela (Marcella) Lepe Quiroz — Artist and Cultural Advocate
Background and Training Marcela Lepe Quiroz (born May 13, 1966 in Puerto Vallarta) is the daughter of Manuel Lepe and art promoter Laura Quiroz. She began engaging with art from a very young age, painting alongside her father from about age four and adopting his naïve artistic approach.

Artistic Career Marcella continued in the naïf tradition she learned from her father and has become an active artist in her own right, creating mural works and paintings that celebrate and extend his visual legacy in Puerto Vallarta. She has produced notable public artworks, such as the mural “Raíces” in the lobby of Hotel Las Palmas, featuring elements evocative of Puerto Vallarta’s landscape and Lepe’s visual language. Marcela has also been directly involved in decorating and restoring iconic public art, such as redecorating the maxiletras of “Puerto Vallarta” on the Malecón using motifs informed by her father’s style, helping reinforce the city’s cultural branding.

Cultural Leadership and Community Work She was named director of the Puerto Vallarta Institute of Culture, where she has promoted arts, local artists, and community cultural programs, including outreach to children and youth. Beyond painting, Marcela’s early career involved theater, dance, music, and radio; she formed performing groups, wrote and directed productions, and engaged in cultural promotion across multiple arts disciplines. She has also been recognized in Puerto Vallarta with awards such as the Premio Vallarta “Manuel Lepe Macedo” for her artistic contributions.

Mexican Cuisine is More Than Just Food. Discover the Flavors of Mexico: A Comprehensive Guide to Mexican Gastronomy in Puerto Vallarta
Mexican cuisine is more than just food; it is a rich tapestry of history, ancient techniques, and vibrant flavors. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, Mexican gastronomy is a beloved global treasure.
Mexican Cuisine is More Than Just Food
Mexican Cuisine is More Than Just Food
Whether you are strolling through the sun-drenched streets of Puerto Vallarta or dining at a traditional cantina, this guide explores the essential dishes that define Mexico’s culinary identity.
The Heritage of Mexican Cuisine
Mexican food is the result of a unique fusion between ancient pre-Hispanic techniques and European ingredients introduced centuries ago. This blend of local products like corn and chilies with European spices has created one of the richest culinary traditions in the world.
1- Chilaquiles: The Ultimate Breakfast Considered the most popular breakfast in Mexico, Chilaquiles consists of fried or toasted corn totopos (triangular pieces) soaked in a spicy red or green sauce. Usually topped with shredded chicken, eggs (scrambled or sunny-side up), fresh cheese, coriander, and onion, they are traditionally served with a side of fried beans.
2- Tacos: A Global Icon Tacos are recognized as the most popular Mexican dish worldwide. Often called “the art of eating a corn tortilla,” a taco can be filled with hundreds of different ingredients—Mexicans would never deny a taco to anyone!

3- Mole: A Complex Masterpiece Mole is a sophisticated sauce made from a mixture of dried chilies, tomatoes, chocolate, seeds, and spices. It is one of the most representative dishes of the country, offering a unique balance of sweet and spicy notes.
4- Chile en Nogada This festive dish features a Poblano pepper stuffed with picadillo (a mixture of ground meat, fruits, and spices). It is topped with a walnut-based cream sauce and decorated with pomegranate seeds and parsley to represent the colors of the Mexican flag.
Coastal Favorites in Puerto Vallarta As a stunning resort town on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, Puerto Vallarta is the perfect place to sample fresh seafood dishes
Aguachile: A typical dish from the western coast, prepared with raw shrimp, lime juice, cucumber, coriander, and red onion Ceviche: A fresh classic including raw fish, onions, chilies, carrots, and lime juice. Pescado Zarandeado: A full-sided fish covered in sauce and grilled over a wooden fire, known for its smoky aroma. Camarones al Diablo: For spice lovers, these “Deviled Shrimp” are cooked in a fiery blend of Chipotle and Chile de Árbol
Torta Ahogada: A specialty of the state of Jalisco (where Puerto Vallarta is located), this is a pork sandwich “drowned” in spicy hot sauce Birria: Seasoned beef or goat slow-cooked in a variety of chilies, served with a flavorful tomato-based consommé Tortilla Soup: A comforting classic made of crispy fried tortilla strips in a tomato-based chicken broth, topped with avocado and cheese Carnitas: Different parts of pork fried in lard and slow-cooked in copper pots for hours until tender.
Beyond these famous dishes, Mexico is the origin of several world-changing ingredients : Corn: The primary base for most Mexican preparations. Cacao: Used to create chocolate. Vanilla: A staple for desserts globally. Avocados: The heart of the beloved Guacamole. Chili Peppers: Providing heat and flavor to cuisines across the globe.
