Nayarit Best 2025 Winners, Riviera Nayarit. Meet the Winners of Lo Mejor de Nayarit 2025!

The ceremony, held at Marival Emotions Resort & Suites Riviera Nayarit by Mercure, brought together chefs, traditional cooks, tour operators, artisans, and representatives from different levels of government, all recognizing the value of sustainable tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The third edition of Lo Mejor de Nayarit 2025 (The best of Nayarit) has been a true tribute to the hard work of the state’s entire tourism community. With more than 96,600 votes and the participation of both travelers and locals, the event showcased the pride inspired by Nayarit’s destinations, traditions, gastronomy, and hospitality.

A very symbolic detail was the design of the awards: pieces crafted by Wixárika artisans using plastic recovered from the ocean during beach cleanups—a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting the environment.

Without a doubt, Lo Mejor de Nayarit 2025 not only honored the winners across its 30 categories, but also highlighted the cultural, natural, and human wealth of this state, consolidating it as one of Mexico’s most attractive destinations.

On the Road in Mexico Experience

On the Road in Mexico Experience. Exploring Mexico’s Back Roads — Safety and Common Sense. We’ve had a few people ask about the safety of driving Mexico’s off-highway routes, especially along the Baja. It is a good question. Dorothy and I have spent decades exploring those dusty tracks, mountain passes, and coastal detours, and while we’ve had incredible adventures, we have also learned a few lessons the hard way.

On the Road in Mexico
On the Road in Mexico

Driving the back roads of Mexico can be both rewarding and safe — if you are prepared.
Here are a few essentials we always follow:

Know your vehicle. Make sure it is mechanically sound, with good tires and a full-size spare. A high-clearance vehicle makes a big difference.

On the Road in Mexico
On the Road in Mexico

Plan ahead. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) and check distances between fuel stops. Some stretches of Baja are long and lonely.

Stay connected. Have a charged phone, local SIM card, or satellite communicator if you are heading into remote areas.

Drive by daylight. Avoid night driving — not because of people, but because of livestock, potholes, and topes (speed bumps).

On the Road in Mexico
On the Road in Mexico

Let someone know your route. Tell a friend or relative where you’re headed, especially if you will be out of cell range.

Ask and listen. Check with locals whenever you can — they know current road conditions best. And do not hesitate to reach out to trusted Facebook communities like Talk Baja or On The Road In Mexico for up-to-date travel advice.
Mexico’s back roads lead to some of the most breathtaking landscapes and authentic communities in the country. With common sense, preparation, and a spirit of respect, they can be traveled safely and enjoyed deeply.

Sometimes the best adventures begin where the pavement ends.
Dorothy and I loved exploring the back roads of Mexico — places where the cacti tower like guardians of the desert and every turn holds the promise of discovery. Yes, we may have pushed that exploration a little too far at times… but that’s where the real stories begin.

Puerto Vallarta Some History

0

Puerto Vallarta Some History. Before the hotels, cruises, and Instagram-worthy sunsets, Puerto Vallarta was just a peaceful village nestled between the Sierra Madre mountains and the Pacific Ocean. In the 19th century, the area was called Las Peñas, a modest port used by fishermen and cattle ranchers from the nearby valley.

Puerto Vallarta Some History
Puerto Vallarta Some History

What makes Old Vallarta so charming today, its narrow streets, steep inclines, and unexpected turns, stems from a surprising fact: the streets were laid out along the old paths of cows and mules. These animals naturally followed the most accessible routes down to the Cuale River and the sea. When the population grew, these paths were simply paved over, without ever redesigning the town.

That’s why, even today, Puerto Vallarta retains its organic, almost vibrant feel, where every alleyway seems to follow the rhythm of the landscape rather than an architect’s plan. Walking its streets is like traveling back in time—to where the footsteps of fishermen, animals, and the first inhabitants gently shaped the heart of the city.

Puerto Vallarta, where love and cinema collide…

In 1963, actor Richard Burton arrived in Puerto Vallarta to film The Night of the Iguana. His partner, Elizabeth Taylor, immediately captured the world’s attention. Their love, their eccentricity, and their presence would forever change the destiny of this small fishing village, which became a legendary destination on the Mexican Riviera.

1- The film shoot that changed everything
John Huston’s film brought Puerto Vallarta to the attention of the general public. The Burton-Taylor couple, hounded by the international press, transformed the hills of Mismaloya and the cobblestone streets into a veritable movie set.

2- The Bridge of Love
Richard Burton gifted Elizabeth Taylor a villa (the famous Casa Kimberly) before buying the house across the street. Between the two, he had a small suspension bridge built: the Puente del Amor (Bridge of Love). A secret passageway to escape prying eyes… or to make peace after an argument.

3- An eternal legend

Today, Casa Kimberly is a charming boutique hotel. The bridge, the original tiles, and the bay views still evoke Hollywood glamour and the couple’s passionate romance. A bronze statue, installed right in front of the house, perpetuates this romantic myth.

Burton-Taylor Anecdotes

The Filming That Changed Vallarta’s Destiny
In 1963, director John Huston set up his cameras in the wild cove of Mismaloya to film The Night of the Iguana. Under the sun and the cries of parrots, Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, and Sue Lyon brought to life a scorching drama set between jungle and ocean.

Puerto Vallarta Some History

But the real story unfolded off-camera with the arrival of Elizabeth Taylor.

When the jungle became a film set, Puerto Vallarta entered the annals of history.

Even Hollywood stars sometimes find themselves upside down!

One afternoon, Richard Burton wanted to show Elizabeth Taylor the cobblestone streets of Old Vallarta, behind the wheel of a brand-new jeep. The locals laughed, the children waved… until a sharp turn sent the jeep tumbling onto its side! More of a scare than anything else: Burton got up, laughing – “That day, Puerto Vallarta brought me back down to earth!” The anecdote spread throughout the town and forever cemented the bond between the couple and the city.

A small fall that became a great legend in the streets of Vallarta.

The forbidden parties of the jungle

In Mismaloya, near the filming of The Night of the Iguana, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had transformed their villa into a timeless refuge. At night, the jungle came alive: lanterns hung overhead, music filled the air, and laughter and whispers filled the air as guests came from far and wide. Actors, fishermen, journalists, even politicians—all drawn by the aura of the legendary couple.

These parties were considered “forbidden”: too free, too noisy, too scandalous for the time. But it was from this nocturnal frenzy that the legend of Puerto Vallarta was born: a small fishing village that, in just a few nights, became the stage for the world’s passions.

4- General Expat Community & Integration Tips

Expat-Communities & Meetup in Puerto Vallarta
Expat-Communities & Meetup in Puerto Vallarta

What we know:

Many expats mention that in PV you will find plenty of clubs, interest-groups (book clubs, salsa dancing, beach groups) to join.
Integration is easier if you participate in activities, engage with locals, and don’t rely solely on expat-only groups.
Tip: At arrival:
Join one large expat social group (like above) so you get “in”.
Pick one hobby you like (e.g., yoga, hiking, language exchange) and use that to meet both locals & internationals.
Online forums & Facebook groups are GOLD for practical questions (visas, housing, local health care).

Visas and Legal Requirements for Long Stays

Mexico’s tourist visa (FMM) allows many nationalities to stay up to 180 days — ideal for remote workers exploring short-term stays.

For long-term stays, consider the Temporary Resident Visa, valid for 1–4 years. To qualify, you will typically need:

Proof of income ($2,500–3,000 USD/month) or savings (~$45,000 USD)
Valid passport
Proof of remote or freelance work abroad

There is no official “digital nomad visa” yet, but working remotely for foreign clients is allowed under temporary residency.

Pro Tip: Work with a local immigration consultant for renewals or bank account setup.

Minimalist$700$300$50$0$1,050

Premium$1,500+$600$100$200$2,400+

Community, Networking & Lifestyle

Puerto Vallarta’s expat and digital nomad scene is active, diverse, and easy to join.

Where to Connect

Meetup Groups: PV Digital Nomads, Expats in Vallarta
Facebook: Digital Nomads Mexico, Expats in PV
Coworking Mixers: Weekly meetups in Versalles & Romantic Zone

From sunrise yoga to live music, open-mic nights, and community beach cleanups, you will always find something happening.

Challenges of Working Remotely in Paradise

Even paradise has quirks. Here’s what remote workers in PV wish they’d known:

Internet drops during heavy rain — mobile data backup helps.
Humidity can damage electronics — use dehumidifiers.
Power outages in older areas — bring a power bank.
Noise (traffic, roosters, fireworks!) — choose soundproof rentals.
Distractions — sunsets and margaritas can kill productivity.

With a good plan and flexible mindset, you’ll adjust to PV’s laid-back rhythm in no time.

Final Checklist Before You Move

Find housing with verified fiber internet
Review visa/residency rules
Get international health insurance
Join coworking or networking groups
Learn basic Spanish phrases
Prepare backup data/power solutions

With ocean views, friendly locals, and modern infrastructure, PV gives remote professionals the rare gift of work-life harmony.

Whether you stay six months or settle long-term, you will find that Puerto Vallarta is where productivity meets pura vida.

More hidden gems off the beaten path too. Would you like that?

Here are more off-the-beaten-path beach bars / restaurants around Puerto Vallarta — less crowded, a bit more local / adventurous.

11- Playa Conchas Chinas

Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta
Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta

This beach just south of the main tourist zone is quieter, scenic, and has a few beach-restaurants that feel more local. Puerto Vallarta Mexico

Good for a relaxed lunch or early dinner with fewer crowds.

Tip: Take a taxi or Uber, and plan your visit with plenty of daylight for the walk or beach access.

12- Playa Quimixto + Los Cocos

Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta
Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta

Reachable only by boat from Boca de Tomatlán, this village beach south of Puerto Vallarta offers a very different vibe.

Los Cocos is the permanent beach-bar/restaurant there serving fresh seafood and cocktails in a rustic, natural setting.

Tip: Arrive midday to get good light and avoid boat-rush crowds; bring cash and swimwear/footwear for sand & shallow waves.

13- Wikari Beach Club (Quimixto, south of PV)

Located in the Quimixto area, this beach club is more secluded, working with local development and offering a natural vibe.

Great for a more adventurous day trip: quiet beach, good food & drinks, off the typical tourist circuit.

Tip: Boat access required; plan transport ahead; bring bug-spray and reef-friendly sunscreen.

Bonus Tips for Hidden Gems:

Transport & timing matter: Many off-path spots require boat, taxi, or earlier arrival.
Bring some cash: Smaller spots may prefer pesos or simpler payment.
Check for minimum spend on chairs: Some beach bars tie loungers to food/drink orders.
Sunset-friendly: Arrive in late afternoon if you want the best lighting + mood.
Respect the environment: Less-developed beaches often have fewer facilities; bring water, sunscreen, shade.

Mmore even further off-grid spots (hidden coves, local beach shacks, remote bays)

More off-the-beaten-path beach bars / restaurants around Puerto Vallarta — less crowded, a bit more local / adventurous.

14-Majahuitas (Boat Access Only)

Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta
Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta

Described as a “hidden beach club paradise … accessible only by boat” on the coast south of Puerto Vallarta.
Great for a day of sun, sea, cocktails and perhaps music in a relatively secluded setting.
What to know / tips: You will need to arrange boat transport (check departure points and times). Since it is remote, plan ahead: bring sunscreen, water shoes, maybe cash. If you want to stay until sunset or evening, check return boat or lodging options.

15-. Playa Las Gemelas

Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta
Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta

Listed as “a more remote and secluded option … a short ride south of Puerto Vallarta’s central area”.
Smaller beach/cove feeling, fewer crowds; ideal for a quieter beach day with a simple beachfront bar/restaurant.
Access might involve taxi / colectivo then a short walk down to the beach.
Basic amenities: don’t expect full resort service; bring some supplies.
If you want lunch or drinks on the sand, ask locally for the small palapa-bars.

16- Playa Punta Negra

Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta
Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta

Described in local travel-blogs as “a hidden gem … small beachfront restaurants and bars … escape from the crowds” in the Puerto Vallarta area.
Rugged setting, jungle + cliffs + one or two palapas/bar-restaurants = true off-grid feel.
Access may require a hike down or a boat/taxi; less signage.
The beachfront restaurants/bars here may be more rustic, so go in with flexible expectations.
Ideal for lunch + chill day rather than full party.

17- Playa Colomitos / Playa Caballo / Playa Madagascar — South Shore Hidden Trio

Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta
Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta

This group of beaches is cited in a guided excursion as “most beautiful in the area … along south shore … jungle canopy and less visited”.
They offer very low-key bars/restaurants (or palapa lunch spots) and a real sense of isolation.
Getting there: bus + hike and/or boat are part of the journey.
Facilities will be minimal; bring water, sun protection, maybe snacks.
Return transport may be limited — plan your exit time.

18- Yelapa Beach (small village + beach bar experience)

Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta
Beach-Bars Beachfront in Puerto Vallarta

Highlighted by major travel media as “the secret beach … 30 minute boat ride from Marina Vallarta … pull up a stool at the thatched-roof bar …”
Unique village/beach bar combo: relax, grab fish tacos, drink, hammock.
Access only by boat (water taxi) so check timing and cost.
Village setting means more laid-back, local rather than resort-luxury.
Stay for lunch or afternoon; if staying overnight, simple lodgings only.

Getting the most out of off-grid beach stops:

Plan transport: Boat or hike might be required. Always check return options.
Bring essentials: Water, sunblock, snacks or cash – many bars are simple and remote.
Time it right: Arriving midday gives you best light and more relaxed conditions; early or later can be magical.
Expect minimal service: Off-grid means fewer amenities; go for the nature & vibe.
Check weather/sea conditions**: Some remote coves are more exposed; boat rides may be affected.
