On the Road in Mexico Experience. Exploring Mexico’s Back Roads — Safety and Common Sense. We’ve had a few people ask about the safety of driving Mexico’s off-highway routes, especially along the Baja. It is a good question. Dorothy and I have spent decades exploring those dusty tracks, mountain passes, and coastal detours, and while we’ve had incredible adventures, we have also learned a few lessons the hard way.
Driving the back roads of Mexico can be both rewarding and safe — if you are prepared. Here are a few essentials we always follow:
Know your vehicle. Make sure it is mechanically sound, with good tires and a full-size spare. A high-clearance vehicle makes a big difference.
On the Road in Mexico
Plan ahead. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) and check distances between fuel stops. Some stretches of Baja are long and lonely.
Stay connected. Have a charged phone, local SIM card, or satellite communicator if you are heading into remote areas.
Drive by daylight. Avoid night driving — not because of people, but because of livestock, potholes, and topes (speed bumps).
On the Road in Mexico
Let someone know your route. Tell a friend or relative where you’re headed, especially if you will be out of cell range.
Ask and listen. Check with locals whenever you can — they know current road conditions best. And do not hesitate to reach out to trusted Facebook communities like Talk Baja or On The Road In Mexico for up-to-date travel advice. Mexico’s back roads lead to some of the most breathtaking landscapes and authentic communities in the country. With common sense, preparation, and a spirit of respect, they can be traveled safely and enjoyed deeply.
Sometimes the best adventures begin where the pavement ends. Dorothy and I loved exploring the back roads of Mexico — places where the cacti tower like guardians of the desert and every turn holds the promise of discovery. Yes, we may have pushed that exploration a little too far at times… but that’s where the real stories begin.

Puerto Vallarta Some History. Before the hotels, cruises, and Instagram-worthy sunsets, Puerto Vallarta was just a peaceful village nestled between the Sierra Madre mountains and the Pacific Ocean. In the 19th century, the area was called Las Peñas, a modest port used by fishermen and cattle ranchers from the nearby valley.
Puerto Vallarta Some History
What makes Old Vallarta so charming today, its narrow streets, steep inclines, and unexpected turns, stems from a surprising fact: the streets were laid out along the old paths of cows and mules. These animals naturally followed the most accessible routes down to the Cuale River and the sea. When the population grew, these paths were simply paved over, without ever redesigning the town.
That’s why, even today, Puerto Vallarta retains its organic, almost vibrant feel, where every alleyway seems to follow the rhythm of the landscape rather than an architect’s plan. Walking its streets is like traveling back in time—to where the footsteps of fishermen, animals, and the first inhabitants gently shaped the heart of the city.
Puerto Vallarta, where love and cinema collide…
In 1963, actor Richard Burton arrived in Puerto Vallarta to film The Night of the Iguana. His partner, Elizabeth Taylor, immediately captured the world’s attention. Their love, their eccentricity, and their presence would forever change the destiny of this small fishing village, which became a legendary destination on the Mexican Riviera.
Puerto Vallarta Some History
1- The film shoot that changed everything John Huston’s film brought Puerto Vallarta to the attention of the general public. The Burton-Taylor couple, hounded by the international press, transformed the hills of Mismaloya and the cobblestone streets into a veritable movie set.
Puerto Vallarta Some History
2- The Bridge of Love Richard Burton gifted Elizabeth Taylor a villa (the famous Casa Kimberly) before buying the house across the street. Between the two, he had a small suspension bridge built: the Puente del Amor (Bridge of Love). A secret passageway to escape prying eyes… or to make peace after an argument.
Puerto Vallarta Some History
3- An eternal legend
Today, Casa Kimberly is a charming boutique hotel. The bridge, the original tiles, and the bay views still evoke Hollywood glamour and the couple’s passionate romance. A bronze statue, installed right in front of the house, perpetuates this romantic myth.
Puerto Vallarta Some History
Burton-Taylor Anecdotes
The Filming That Changed Vallarta’s Destiny In 1963, director John Huston set up his cameras in the wild cove of Mismaloya to film The Night of the Iguana. Under the sun and the cries of parrots, Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, and Sue Lyon brought to life a scorching drama set between jungle and ocean.
Puerto Vallarta Some History
But the real story unfolded off-camera with the arrival of Elizabeth Taylor.
When the jungle became a film set, Puerto Vallarta entered the annals of history.
Even Hollywood stars sometimes find themselves upside down!
One afternoon, Richard Burton wanted to show Elizabeth Taylor the cobblestone streets of Old Vallarta, behind the wheel of a brand-new jeep. The locals laughed, the children waved… until a sharp turn sent the jeep tumbling onto its side! More of a scare than anything else: Burton got up, laughing – “That day, Puerto Vallarta brought me back down to earth!” The anecdote spread throughout the town and forever cemented the bond between the couple and the city.
A small fall that became a great legend in the streets of Vallarta.
The forbidden parties of the jungle
In Mismaloya, near the filming of The Night of the Iguana, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had transformed their villa into a timeless refuge. At night, the jungle came alive: lanterns hung overhead, music filled the air, and laughter and whispers filled the air as guests came from far and wide. Actors, fishermen, journalists, even politicians—all drawn by the aura of the legendary couple.
These parties were considered “forbidden”: too free, too noisy, too scandalous for the time. But it was from this nocturnal frenzy that the legend of Puerto Vallarta was born: a small fishing village that, in just a few nights, became the stage for the world’s passions.

Expat-Communities & Meetup Groups in Puerto VallartaThe best places to retire highlight what makes a country stand out.
1- InterNations – Puerto Vallarta
Expat-Communities & Meetup in Puerto Vallarta
What it is: A global expat network with a specific local chapter for PV that lets you meet other expats, attend social events, ask questions about living in Mexico, etc. Why it is good:
Large membership (~3,000+ in PV) spanning many nationalities. Regular events (social meet-ups, mixers) which make meeting people easier. Tip: Join the local PV chapter, check the event calendar, and attend an “Intro” event to start.
What it is: A local social group for expats living in or visiting PV, with events like dinners, wine & appetizers, happy hours. Why it is good:
No membership fee required; very welcoming for new arrivals. Tailored to expats (rather than tourists) so good for building friendships. expatsinvallarta.com Tip: Check their website or Facebook page for upcoming events — joining a casual happy hour is a good low-pressure way to start.
What it is: For those working remotely or simply wanting to meet others with similar interests, there are groups and meet-ups oriented around digital nomad & remote-worker lifestyles.
Why it is good:
Combines socialising + networking + meeting people in a similar situation. Many casual events, remote-work mixers, skill-sharing, café meet-ups. Tip: Search Facebook or Meetup for “Puerto Vallarta Digital Nomads”, “Remote Workers PV”, or check coworking spaces in PV for event boards.
Many expats mention that in PV you will find plenty of clubs, interest-groups (book clubs, salsa dancing, beach groups) to join. Integration is easier if you participate in activities, engage with locals, and don’t rely solely on expat-only groups. Tip: At arrival: Join one large expat social group (like above) so you get “in”. Pick one hobby you like (e.g., yoga, hiking, language exchange) and use that to meet both locals & internationals. Online forums & Facebook groups are GOLD for practical questions (visas, housing, local health care).
For many groups, the neighbourhood is not deeply specified “Centro”, “Zona Romántica”, or “Marina” are common. You can ask the organiser when you join.
Always check the event calendar on their site or social page; some events may be seasonal or change timings.
