If youβve been hearing rumors about the new biometric CURP in Mexico and wondering whether you must get one as a foreigner, youβre not alone.
Iβve been getting questions almost daily like:
Do I need a digital CURP to live in Mexico?
Is biometric CURP required to renew residency?
Can I open a bank account without it?
Will IMSS require it?
So let me clear this up right away:
The biometric CURP is NOT mandatory in Mexico at this time.
However, it may still become important in certain situations, because some institutions are starting to treat it as a requirement for specific transactions. Even if the law technically does not currently require it across the board.
But first, what is the CURP?
What Is A CURP in Mexico?
The CURP (Clave Γnica de Registro de PoblaciΓ³n) is Mexicoβs national identification number. Itβs assigned to every Mexican citizen, and also to foreigners who hold legal residency.
If youβre new to Mexico, think of the CURP as something similar to a Social Security Number in the United States or Canada. Itβs one of the main ways the Mexican government identifies people inside official systems.
Once you become a Temporary or Permanent Resident, you are automatically issued a CURP- it is printed on your card, or you can also look it up online.
The important thing to understand is that the CURP itself is not new. Foreigners with residency in Mexico and Mexican nationals have been using it for years for things like banking, getting an RFC in Mexico, taxes, healthcare enrollment, and other paperwork.
What Is the New Biometric CURP (CURP BiomΓ©trica)?
The reason people are suddenly panicking is because Mexico has introduced the idea of a biometric CURP, sometimes also called a digital CURP.
This new version is tied to biometric identity data, such as fingerprints, a facial photo, and even an iris scan.
Mexicoβs goal is to create a stronger, more secure identity system that reduces fraud and improves verification for government services and private transactions. In other words, the biometric CURP is being positioned as something that could eventually become a more universal form of identification across Mexico.
That sounds dramatic, but itβs important to remember that Mexico is still in the early stages of rolling this out, and foreigners are not the primary focus right now.
July 2025 DOF Announcement: What Was Proposed?
In July 2025, Mexico published the biometric CURP framework in the Diario Oficial de la FederaciΓ³n (DOF).
Whenever something appears in the DOF, people assume it becomes mandatory immediately. But thatβs not always how it works in Mexico.
A proposal can be published, legislated, and introduced as a program, while still being optional or gradually implemented over time. That is exactly what is happening here.
Is the Biometric CURP Mandatory in Mexico Right Now?
No. And this is the part I really want you to understand clearly.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated multiple times that the biometric CURP is not mandatory at this time, and that individuals are not being forced to provide biometric data.
Unfortunately, a lot of media headlines made it sound like everyone, including foreigners, would suddenly be required to complete biometric registration immediately. But thatβs not exactly correct.
Right now, the regular CURP is still being universally accepted throughout Mexico.
Do Foreigners Need the Biometric CURP for Residency or Immigration?
This is the biggest question I receive from people planning their move.
So let me be extremely direct:
The biometric CURP is NOT currently required for residency processes.
I have verified this with several immigration facilitators I work with regularly across Mexico, and they all confirm the same thing:
It is not required for:
Canje
Renewal
Family Unity
Dual citizenship
In case you didnβt know, foreign resident card holders already receive a standard CURP automatically as part of their residency documentation. Itβs been printed on all new residency cards for the past few years now. For those who obtained their residency card before 2023, you can find your CURP online here.
Could this change in the future? Yes. Mexicoβs policies evolve. But as of today, immigration is not requiring a digital CURP for foreigners.
When Will the Biometric CURP Actually Matter?
Even though biometric CURP is not mandatory, the reality is that it may still affect certain transactions.
In Mexico, many requirements donβt happen through one national announcement..they happen slowly through individual institutions.
For example, it may become difficult in the future to do things like:
Enroll in IMSS public healthcare
Open a new Mexican bank account
Sign up for certain government programs
Access services that require stronger identity verification
Some banks may ask for it sooner than others. Some IMSS offices may interpret the rules differently depending on the state.
This is why Mexican bureaucracy can feel inconsistent: two people can have completely different experiences doing the exact same process. I know⦠annoying.
Should You Get the Digital CURP Now?
My honest recommendation is simple: Do not rush to process the digital CURP (CURP biometrica) unless you are specifically required to do so for something important.
If you are living normally in Mexico, you do not need it yet. If you are doing residency paperwork, you do not need it yet. If you arenβt living in Mexico yet, I wouldnβt rush to come just to process this new ID.
The only time I would personally go through the hassle is if you are trying to complete something specific where the institution requires it.
Otherwise, waiting is the smartest move.
And to be honest, the website to schedule an online appointment through RENAPO- doesnβt even work reliably right nowβ¦ which is the most Mexican thing ever.
Digital CURP and the New Cell Phone Registry in Mexico
A separate issue that has added even more confusion is the new national cell phone registry. Yes, Mexico is moving toward stricter phone registration policies. But hereβs what most people donβt realize:
Cellphone providers are not required to fully register CURP information until mid-2026.
That gives you time.
Right now, many providers are not fully trained on how to process foreigners correctly, and there have already been reports of foreign accounts being changed incorrectly or billing history being lost during updates.
So my advice is practical:
Unless you absolutely must update your CURP with your Mexican cell provider right now, I would wait a few more months and let the systems stabilize.
What About Tourists and Prepaid SIM Cards?
This part is still unclear.
There are claims that prepaid SIM purchases may require stricter registration starting in June 2026.
But tourists do not have CURPs, so Mexico still has not clearly explained what documentation foreigners without residency will need to buy prepaid SIM cards at OXXO or convenience stores.
This is a developing policy, and we will learn more as implementation gets closer.
What To Do Next?
Stay calm. Stay informed. You are not obligated to act right away.
The biometric CURP is not mandatory right now.
Foreigners do not need it at the moment
It could become a requirement for specific things like banking or IMSS.
Mexicoβs rollout is slow, inconsistent, and still evolving.
This is exactly why I always tell people: moving to Mexico is absolutely doable, but you need accurate, up-to-date information.
