Pilgrimages in Puerto Vallarta

Pilgrimages in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe (Las peregrinaciones católicas)

The pilgrimages in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe gather thousands of believers during the first 12 days of December. They take to the streets of Downtown Puerto Vallarta to show their faith and give thanks for the favors received during the year.

Pilgrimages in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe (Las peregrinaciones católicas)

Up to 400 processions are registered in the program of the Fiestas Guadalupanas of Puerto Vallarta. In every one of these processions, the people of Puerto Vallarta pray to the Virgin of Guadalupe through a route which starts at 31 de Octubre Street and goes down Juarez Street to the altar of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

Carriages alluding to the apparition of the virgin on the hill of Tepeyac, groups of folkloric dancers, Mariachi and traditional live music accompany the most solvent pilgrims.

The Peregrinación de los Favorecidos (Pilgrimage of the Favored) is particularly important. With up to 20K people participating, this is the largest procession of all. The Pilgrimage of the Favored usually begins in the morning and continues for several hours on December 12.

Because they embody the collective identity of the community, the Fiestas Guadalupanas of Puerto Vallarta were declared “Intangible Heritage of the State of Jalisco” in 2018.

Catholic pilgrimages are sacred journeys to shrines or places of great religious significance (such as the Holy Land, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, or sites of Marian apparitions) that the faithful undertake out of devotion, petition, thanksgiving, or as an act of conversion and strengthening of faith, remembering that earthly life is a journey toward heaven, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Purposes and Meaning:
Encounter with God: It is a way to step outside oneself to encounter God in places where His grace has been manifested in a special way.

Experience of Faith: It seeks conversion, the forgiveness of sins, and profound spiritual growth, often with the possibility of gaining plenary indulgences, especially during Jubilees. Connection to history: They allow us to relive the steps of Jesus, the apostles, and the saints, and to connect with the tradition and culture of the faith.

Spiritual journey: Beyond the physical, it is an inner journey that reflects each believer’s path to holiness.

Characteristics: They can be individual or in groups, organized by dioceses, religious families, or thematic groups (such as groups for the sick).
Historically, they involved long walks, but today they are also undertaken by vehicle, maintaining the spiritual significance of the journey.
They are linked to rites, prayers, contemplation, and sometimes the veneration of relics.

Catholic pilgrimages are journeys, often on foot, that the faithful make out of devotion or as a vow to a shrine or place considered sacred. These journeys have a profound spiritual meaning and are seen as a metaphor for the Christian life’s journey toward heaven.

Purpose and meaning: The main objective of a pilgrimage goes beyond a simple physical journey. Its purposes include:
Spiritual renewal: It is an opportunity for reflection, penance, and personal growth in faith.
Encounter with God: Pilgrims seek to draw closer to God in places where He has manifested Himself in a special way, through His grace or miracles.

Demonstration of sacrifice and devotion: The effort and sacrifice of time and money associated with the journey are a way to express faith and fulfill promises or vows.

Connection with the history of faith: It allows believers to feel connected to important figures in Catholicism, such as Jesus, the Virgin Mary, or the apostles, by visiting the places where they lived or where sacred events occurred.
Search for forgiveness and answers: Many people undertake these journeys hoping to obtain forgiveness for sins, seek solace, or find answers to vital questions.

Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta

0

Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta: Get Ready for An Amazing Outdoor Experience! Every winter, Puerto Vallarta welcomes some very special visitors: humpback whales. The air in the Mexican Pacific turns cooler at this time of year, and the whales come to enjoy the warmer waters.

According to fishermen, the first jump signals the official start of the season. Picture this: you’re out on the ocean, surrounded by the vast silence and endless horizon, when out of nowhere, a massive 40-ton beast emerges right in front of you. The sight is unforgettable: an ancient dance that connects humans with nature.

Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta

The 2025-2026 humpback whale-watching season in Puerto Vallarta is set to kick off in December. Here’s everything you need to know to enjoy one of the most exciting experiences on the Mexican Pacific coast.

An Unforgettable Outdoor Adventure
There is an extra reason to choose Puerto Vallarta if you are planning a trip to the Mexican Pacific coast: the season for watching humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) is about to begin, and it’s sure to be a truly magical experience.

Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta

Every year, these majestic creatures migrate from their feeding grounds in cold waters to the warm waters of Banderas Bay, which encompasses Puerto Vallarta and its surroundings.

The 2025-2026 humpback whale-watching season is set to kick off on December 8 and will continue through the end of March, with some excursions possibly extending into April. The optimal months for whale watching in Puerto Vallarta are January and February, when the likelihood of activity is at its peak. During these months, you can expect to see more playful behavior, jumping, and surface activity.

Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta

If you are planning a humpback whale watching tour in Puerto Vallarta, consider the following:

Book in advance to ensure availability. Tours tend to reach capacity quickly during high season.
Rise and shine early. The sea can be calmer in the morning, which is a good reason to leave early.
Ensure you have a camera with a good zoom lens or binoculars so you do not miss any of the spectacular jumps.

Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta
Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta

When booking, confirm that the tour operator of your choice is authorized for whale watching, follows good navigation practices, has specialized guides or marine biologists, and offers preferred morning schedules.

Adrenaline and Excitement on the High Seas

After you have made your tour reservation, prepare for an unforgettable journey packed with exhilarating experiences. The experience of going on a humpback whale-watching tour in Puerto Vallarta can be summed up as follows:

Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta
Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta

You navigate Banderas Bay, keeping an eye out for any signs: air currents lift them up, tails rise, and they leap off without warning.
The guides typically provide explanations of the whales’ behavior, including courtship, calving, and the positions of their tails while diving.

You can even go on some boats that have hydrophones, which allow you to hear the song of humpback whales underwater.
Even though the tour operator has mapped out common sighting areas, the whales are the ones who ultimately decide on the route. The presence of these creatures is sometimes apparent when they approach the boat, and at other times, they are seen in the distance.

Here are Some Extra Tips

Arrive early, preferably wearing light clothing, and remember to bring a jacket for cool mornings out at sea.
Remember to bring a hat, sunglasses, a camera, sunscreen, and non-slip shoes. Patience and respect are key when observing humpback whales. This eco-friendly activity is all about fostering a connection with nature.

Local Preservation Initiatives

Humpback whale watching is a recreational, educational, and above all, extremely enjoyable outdoor activity. It also supports important conservation efforts in Puerto Vallarta and the region.

A good example of this is the work of Ecología y Conservación de Ballenas, AC (Ecobac.) This is a non-profit organization that focuses on research, environmental education, and sustainable ecotourism. It is dedicated to the humpback whales of Banderas Bay and other areas of the Mexican Pacific.

Among its activities are:

Whale cataloging by identifying them through their unique tail patterns. Advocating for conscientious boating habits, as exemplified by the “Less speed = more lives” initiative. RABEN (the Entangled Whale Assistance Network) is responsible for the rescue of humpback whales and other cetaceans that become entangled in fishing nets.

When you book with a responsible tour operator, a portion of the fee you pay usually goes to these conservation programs. This dual dimension of protection and entertainment contributes to much more responsible tourism.

The humpback whale migration is an incredible natural phenomenon that can be observed during the humpback whale-watching season in Puerto Vallarta. Keep in mind that the 2025-2026 season is set to begin in December of this year and will extend through March or April of 2026.

To ensure an unforgettable experience, we recommend booking your preferred tour well in advance. We recommend that you choose certified operators such as Vallarta Adventures or Ecotours Vallarta. These companies work in partnership with Ecobac and RABEN, which are local non-profit organizations dedicated to the conservation and rescue of entangled whales.

We invite you to enjoy your next whale-watching experience in Puerto Vallarta in a responsible and conscious manner!

Puerto Vallarta Waterfalls Palo María

Puerto Vallarta Waterfalls Palo María. Imagine all of us backpack slung, sandals clinking, hearts full of anticipation, jumping on a local bus at the corner of Constitución and Basilio Badillo for just 10 pesos. No tourist trap, just locals, expats, fellow wanderers, all piled on, laughing and chatting as the bus meandered 20 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta toward the jungle-hidden river of Palo María.

Puerto Vallarta Waterfalls Palo María Review by David Living Outdoors

Puerto Vallarta Waterfalls Palo María

We hopped off, crossed a small road before the little bridge (look for the “Puente Palo María” sign), and took the path on the north side of the river and began our hike. At first it was easy: dirt path, jungle canopy overhead, birds chirping, the kind of calm that makes you forget you’re even near a city. But soon the path turned wild: rocks, roots, and the soft rumble of flowing water.

We followed the river. We crossed it. Then crossed it again. Each time water lapped around our ankles, our shoes getting wetter, the jungle chorus growing louder. After roughly 1.4 km about 45 minutes, we arrived: the first waterfall.

Puerto Vallarta Waterfalls Palo María

What greeted us blew us away. Crystal-clear green water pooling below the falls. Fish darting among the rocks. Jungle all around. The water felt cool, not bite-cold, but just refreshing enough to wash off the hike’s sweat and bring a gasp + grin. We jumped in, swam, floated, splashed, soaked it all in.

We lingered. We laughed. We snorkeled with our eyes open underwater, watching fish glide past. The stones around the pool reflecting in the water, magical.

Then curious and adventurous, a few of us decided to press on. We heard there were more waterfalls upstream, at least seven, though most stick to the first one. The “official” route to the second cascade involved scaling the first falls using ropes on the left side. That looked sketchy, even for the agile among us.

So instead I took the “safer” path: a narrow trail hugging the south-side cliff edge. It starts about 100 m downstream and skirted the ravine, above the first falls, offering a dizzying walk over narrow ledges and jungle cliff-faces. New guide-ropes had been installed — but still, if you’re scared of heights or slippery edges, skip this bit.

At the end, the second waterfall. Smaller than the first, but natural and beautiful, with its own pool and serenity. The kind of spot where if you’re quiet and still, the jungle hushes, and you realize you are far from city noise or tourist clutter.

Climbing higher waterfalls? I’ve heard there are many along Palo María’s course. But fair warning: after the first two it gets serious, rock-climbing, ropes, steep scrambles, and more risk. Not for the faint of heart.

All in all: Palo María is a treasure: a short (compared to epic treks), accessible hike, especially if you take public transport, with jungle vibes, water magic, and the thrill of discovery. Perfect for a half-day adventure, a refreshing swim, and memories that stick.

If you love jungle, water, simple adventure, and a little bit of adrenaline, you gotta check this place out. For added fun we returned to the highway and grabbed a bus to the beach town of Mismaloya for lunch. Great place to hang out to complete the day before heading back to Puerto Vallarta. Like and subscribe for more fun adventures.

Bonus Tips for Anyone Going
• Best way there: local bus from Zona Romántica — Basilio Badillo + Constitución; ask for the stop “Palo María / Garza Blanca.”
• Hike to first waterfall: ~1.4 kms each way, 30–45 min each way, moderate difficulty.
• Wear good water-hiking shoes (rocks + stream crossings = slippery).
• Bring water, a towel/swimsuit, bug repellent, maybe a waterproof bag. There are no facilities at the falls.
• If you want more waterfalls upstream — be ready: ropes, rock-scrambling and slippery ledges. Not for beginners or those afraid of heights.

Puerto Vallarta Ranks High on Social Media. How is Puerto Vallarta as a Tourist Destinations ranks in Social Media searches.

Here is a breakdown of how Puerto Vallarta performs as a tourist destination, especially in terms of social-media searches, visibility and popularity, based on recent and past data.

Evidence of strong popularity and search interest

According to recent reporting from 2025, search interest in flights to Puerto Vallarta rose sharply: from January to May 2025, “around 9.4 million searches” were registered in the national market a 26.34% increase compared to the same period the previous year.

In certain months (e.g. summer 2025), searches for summertime travel to Puerto Vallarta saw a big increase, reflecting strong intention to travel there.

The rise is not limited to domestic demand: there’s also documented increasing interest from Canada, with more searches and flight bookings from Canadian cities towards Puerto Vallarta.

This shows Puerto Vallarta remains a hot destination for people actively searching travel options, suggesting good visibility and demand in online/travel-search platforms, which is often correlated with social media buzz and digital interest.

Recognition and social-media standing (past & recent)

In a ranking of “Mexican tourist destinations on social media, Puerto Vallarta was #1 ahead of other well-known destinations.
According to a study on social media interactions for tourism in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta is among the destinations generating the highest number of messages and interactions** — along with a few other top spots — based on analysis of hundreds of thousands of posts.
Its online presence has been acknowledged not only through social-media metrics but also via travel-ranking recognitions: as of 2025, it’s ranked among the “best small cities in the world” by a global ranking.

This indicates not only historical strength but ongoing relevance in social media and digital travel communities.

Tourism performance supports its popularity

Popularity in searches and social media seems backed by real-world tourism numbers:

There is also frequent recognition from major travel-review platforms: as recently as 2023, it ranked #4 among the most popular Mexican destinations based on traveler reviews on TripAdvisor.

Puerto Vallarta Ranks High on Social Media
Puerto Vallarta Ranks High on Social Media

These real-world metrics help sustain the social-media and search-interest: high occupancy and tourist satisfaction tend to drive more posts, shares, recommendations, and searches a virtuous cycle.

Overall: Strong ranking & high visibility on social media, especially some caveats

Strengths:

Puerto Vallarta maintains a top-tier position among Mexican destinations in terms of social media presence and search-interest.
The upward trend in flight searches and tourist bookings suggests growing global and domestic interest.
Combined with high tourist satisfaction and occupancy rates, it continues to be a top-performing, visible tourist destination.

Social-media popularity can fluctuate; it depends on marketing efforts, travel-trends, and external factors (e.g. seasonality, global travel conditions).
High search and social-media metrics do not always mean a “best experience” but given its occupancy rates and positive reviews, Puerto Vallarta seems to combine both visibility and quality offerings.

What this means if you’re evaluating it right now.

If you are considering Puerto Vallarta as a travel destination (or evaluating popularity for social-media reach, travel-marketing, or influence), it still ranks very high in awareness, interest, and relevance.

It retains a strong base audience (both Spanish-speaking and international) — which is good if you’re a content creator, travel blogger, or tourism business aiming for reach.

If you were evaluating “social-media relevance + destination popularity,” PV is still among the top-tier Mexican destinations in the digital/social media space.

Walking in Puerto Vallarta Hidden Art Corridor

Walking in Puerto Vallarta Hidden Art Corridor Guadalupe Sanchez Street. Today I decided to wander down one of Puerto Vallarta’s most underrated treasures, Calle Guadalupe Sánchez. It’s only about 0.8 km (0.5 miles) long, but every step feels like its own little chapter in the story of the city.

Walking in Puerto Vallarta Hidden Art Corridor

As soon as I step onto the street, the cobblestones guide me forward and the city seems to quiet down. The air changes, it becomes that perfect mix of ocean breeze and the faint smell of coffee drifting from the nearby cafés.

Almost immediately, the art begins.

Bright murals burst from the walls near the first intersection. Children painted in surreal colors, giant insects, spiritual symbols, and vibrant patterns all created by local and visiting artists. It feels like walking through an open-air gallery that keeps surprising you with every turn.

A few steps later, the atmosphere shifts from street art to fine art. Colectika, with its contemporary folk art rooted in ancestral Mexican traditions, comes into view. Inside, the sculptures and paintings look alive jaguar spirits, mythical creatures, bold colors, intricate details. You do ntt just see the art… you feel it.

Further down the street, Galería Córsica stands out like an elegant guardian of creativity. Its windows are filled with striking bronze sculptures and modern Mexican paintings that make you slow down whether you planned to or not. There’s a certain quiet sophistication here, the kind of place that invites you to reflect, admire, and get lost in imagination.

As I continue my walk, the architecture tells its own story. Restored colonial houses sit beside modern galleries. Balconies draped in vines overlook bright turquoise doors. Street lamps cast warm shadows on the textured walls. Every building feels like it has lived a long life and still has something to say.

Along the way, restaurants and small cafés fill the air with scents of grilled seafood, fresh pastries, and rich espresso. Locals chat outside doorways, artists carry rolled-up canvases, and the gentle hum of the city reminds you that this street may be quiet but it is very much alive.

By the time I reach the end of Calle Guadalupe Sánchez, the entire walk has felt like a journey through Puerto Vallarta’s artistic soul. It is not just a street, it is a living canvas, a cultural heartbeat, a place where tradition and creativity meet in the most beautiful way.

If you ever come to Puerto Vallarta, do not rush past this little street. Slow down. Look around. Let it tell you its story.
