Take a bus ride to Boca de Tomatlán, the jumping off point for the multiple beaches tucked along Vallarta’s south shore. Ask your driver to bring you to the tiny town’s pier, where brightly painted pangas wait to zip you across the water to the beach. One of the prettiest is Playa Las Animas, a long stretch of tawny sand studded with beach bars all offering lounge chairs, umbrellas, classic Mexican fare and ice-cold bottles of Pacifico. Hiring a panga from Boca to Las Animas will run you about 100 pesos per person each way, but you can always negotiate.
