Best Time of the Year to See Sunsets
The best time depends on what you prioritize: Optimal Weather and Clear Views Dry Season (November through May) this is generally the clearest, least rainy period in Puerto Vallarta. The Legend of the Enamored Lighthouse. It is said that many years ago, a young sailor fell madly in love with the lighthouse keeper’s daughter. Their eyes met across the vastness of the sea, and their love blossomed with each sunset they watched together from the top of the tower.

However, the young woman’s father disapproved of their relationship. He believed a sailor was not a good match for his daughter and forbade them from seeing each other. The young sailor, desperate, promised to return as a rich and successful man so he could ask for his beloved’s hand in marriage. He set sail on a long voyage, but a terrible storm caught him at sea. His ship sank, and he was never seen again. The young woman, consumed by sadness, climbed to the lighthouse every night hoping to see him return.

They say that on nights of a full moon, when the fog envelops the bay, you can hear the sound of a guitar and see the silhouette of a man playing a melancholic melody. Some claim it is the spirit of the young sailor, still waiting for his beloved at the top of the lighthouse.

Discover Banderas Bay Mexico If you are dreaming of a destination where the Sierra Madre mountains literally tumble into the turquoise waters of the Pacific, look no further than Banderas Bay (Bahía de Banderas). As one of the largest and deepest bays in the world, this stunning crescent of coastline is more than just a pretty face, it is a vibrant cultural and ecological hub that straddles two Mexican states.
Discover Banderas Bay Mexico
Whether you are a luxury seeker, a surf nut, or a nature lover, here is everything you need to know about this coastal treasure.
Discover Banderas Bay Mexico?
Located on Mexico’s Central Pacific Coast, Banderas Bay is roughly 350 km (217 miles) west of Guadalajara. Geographically, it forms a massive natural “horseshoe” shape.
Northern Point: Punta de Mita, Nayarit. Southern Point: Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco. The Border: The Ameca River acts as the natural dividing line, slicing the bay into two different states: Jalisco and Nayarit.
The Three Municipalities of the Bay
Banderas Bay is not just one big city; it is a collection of diverse regions governed by three distinct municipalities. Each offers a completely different vibe:
Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco): The heart of the bay. This municipality is home to the world-famous resort city, known for its historic cobblestone “Centro,” the iconic Malecón (boardwalk), and a legendary nightlife scene.
Bahía de Banderas (Nayarit): Often referred to as the Riviera Nayarit, this municipality covers the northern half of the bay. It includes upscale areas like Nuevo Nayarit (formerly Nuevo Vallarta), the yachting hub of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, and the surfing mecca of Sayulita.
Cabo Corrientes (Jalisco):** Marking the rugged southern edge, this municipality is for the off-the-beaten-path traveler. It’s home to remote, boat-access-only beaches like Yelapa and Pizota. What’s on the Menu?
The “tourism offer” here is remarkably diverse. You can wake up in a 5-star resort and spend your afternoon in a jungle hidden beach.
Wildlife & Ecotourism
Banderas Bay is a biological sanctuary.
Whale Watching: From December to March, Humpback whales migrate here to mate and give birth.
Banderas Bay Mexico
Los Arcos Marine Park: Giant granite islands perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving among tropical fish and eels.
Banderas Bay Mexico
Marietas Islands: Home to the famous “Hidden Beach” (Playa del Amor), a beach tucked inside a collapsed volcanic crater.
Adventure & Sports
The Sierra Madre mountains provide a playground for adrenaline junkies.
Mountain Thrills: Ziplining through the canopy, ATV tours through riverbeds, and hiking to hidden waterfalls in Quimixto.
Banderas Bay Mexico
On the Water: World-class surfing in Sayulita and Punta Mita, parasailing over the Malecón, and deep-sea fishing for marlin and tuna.
Banderas Bay Mexico
Culture & Gastronomy
From street tacos to “World’s Best” lists, your taste buds won’t be bored.
The Food: Don’t miss Pescado Zarandeado (grilled marinated fish) or a “Mexology” tour through the Romantic Zone. The Art: Explore the Huichol beadwork in downtown galleries or visit the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, ranked among the best in North America.
Plan Your Escape
Banderas Bay is that rare destination that manages to feel like a bustling international city and a sleepy tropical village all at once. Whether you’re watching the sunset from a luxury catamaran or eating a taco on a plastic chair with your toes in the sand, the “Bay of Flags” always delivers.

This was our first (and last) lunch during our one-week PV trip. The first time we each ordered a pancita taco and a pancita en salsa verde taco ($39/pz; $43 chela).
The pancita in sasa verde was exceptional. Beyond that, they have one of the best salsas bars I have encountered in Mexico (or anywhere?) as there were three different habanero options. Their handmade, blue-corn tortillas are also great. Our second visit, I wanted to make sure to try each of their specials: tacos dorados $120* (uno y uno) and the guacamaya $130* (salsa a lado).
Puerto Vallarta Popular Restaurants El Puerco de Oro
They were both excellent, and it’s so hard to compare them to each other or to our first visit. I think the tacos dorados are awesome because of the texture the tacos dorados provide. This special also offers more surface area to add…more salsas from the salsa bar to! One of our favorite restaurants of the trip, and every item we ordered from here was 5/5! Service and ambiance were also 5/5 IMO.
Tristan (intristang) El Puerco de oroClick to open side panel for more information has gained a cult following in the Versalles neighborhood for specializing in one thing and doing it perfectly: pork belly.
Must-try items include the pork belly tacos and quesadillas, which are known for their crispy skin and tender meat. The restaurant has a laid-back, local feel that highlights the growing culinary reputation of the Versalles area.

Are you planning a trip to the Mexican Pacific but want to go deeper than the standard tourist brochures? Whether you are looking for the cobblestone charm of the Zona Romántica or the pristine, high-end luxury of Punta Mita, the Banderas Bay region offers a world of contrast.
Drawing from the extensive video archives of Promovision, we have compiled the essential guide to navigating these two legendary coastal gems.
Puerto Vallarta: The Heart of Jalisco Puerto Vallarta isn’t just a resort town; it’s a historic city where the Sierra Madre mountains meet the sea.
The Malecon: The city’s heartbeat. Walk the boardwalk to see iconic sculptures, street performers, and the famous Papantla Flyers.
Zona Romántica: The “Old Town” vibe. This is where you’ll find the best traditional taco stands, the vibrant LGBTQ+ scene, and the iconic Playa Los Muertos.
A Step Back in Time: One of the unique aspects of the region is its history. Watching footage from the late 90s reveals how the city has preserved its colonial essence while modernizing its infrastructure.
The Hidden Gems: From the historic port of San Blas to the quiet beaches of Lo de Marco, the northern reaches of Nayarit offer a glimpse of “Old Mexico” that many travelers miss.
Why Experience Matters
Navigating these areas requires more than just a map; it requires an understanding of the local seasons, the “Hurricane Hole” geography that protects the bay, and the annual events like the Festival Gourmet International.
When you travel here, you aren’t just visiting a beach, you are entering a culture. As we’ve documented over decades, the beauty of the region lies in its people and its preservation.
Nature Experience: “Sierra Madre Mountain tours,” “Marietas Islands Hidden Beach.”
