Knowing the climate of the region is essential to properly prepare your trip to Mexico. Puerto Vallarta has a tropical climate. Like other coastal cities in Mexico, the rainy season is from June to October.
It is the low season for tourism due to the high heat and humidity. The rains are not very abundant and even on a rainy day it is possible to enjoy it.
The most favorable months are between November and May. In December, temperatures vary from 21 to 27 degrees. The heat and humidity are more intense from July to October.

Where to sleep in Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is a small city divided into neighborhoods (zones) spread along the Bay of Banderas. In reality, it doesn’t matter which part of the city you stay in because you can get around easily.
You should choose the area you want to stay in carefully depending on the ambiance you are looking for and the budget you have.
Starting from the area closest to the airport heading south down Bahia de Banderas, these are: Marina Vallarta, Hotel Zone, Downtown, Romantic Zone and South Zone.
To help you decide where to stay in Puerto Vallarta, here I present some details on some of the most popular neighborhoods.
Marina Vallarta is a newer neighborhood renowned for its upscale accommodations, boutiques, modern developments, luxury yachts, international cuisine restaurants and a large golf course.
The area is located right next to the airport and about 15 minutes from the center. Although the Marina isn’t within walking distance of downtown Puerto Vallarta, the area is close enough and well-connected that you won’t have to worry as much about taking a taxi to get there.
This area is rather popular among vacationers who come with families, given the presence of all-inclusive hotels. I found it quite pleasant to come at the end of the day and stroll along the pedestrian promenade along the water’s edge while looking at the luxury yachts.
In Marina Vallarta there is also a wide variety of international and Mexican cuisine restaurants, which is a nice change from the restaurants in the center.
Puerto Vallarta Hotel Zone
The next area is the Hotel Zone. This area is renowned mainly for its beautiful beaches and of course, as the name suggests, its numerous hotels and all-inclusives. Also, it is in this area that you can find many shopping center options, such as La Isla or Plaza Caracol.
On the seaside side are the hotels. Crossing the main road, Francisco Medina Ascencio Boulevard establishes a very local part of the city with shopping centers, big box stores, restaurants, banks and other services.
Given the wide variety of hotels in the area, this area can accommodate families, couples and groups. It’s probably a gamble on first-time visitors, given the good dining options and beautiful beaches just a short drive from central Puerto Vallarta.
This district is located between the Hotel Zone and the city center. Mainly a residential area, it is possible to find accommodation within walking distance of the center. A very good option to stay in Puerto Vallarta, given the easy access to the square and the hustle and bustle of the city center.

Between the hotel zone and the Rio Cuale, downtown Puerto Vallarta is the living, beating heart of the city. This is where a lot of the action takes place.
This neighborhood is the perfect place for long, enjoyable exploratory walks to discover the unique local features. Here you can find an abundance of restaurants, bars and shops whose style, colors and ambiance are unique in the world.
A visit to Puerto Vallarta cannot be done without a walk along the Malecon, a charming seaside promenade that gracefully traces the edges of the beach and the ocean.

Even though the summer months are the hurricane season, one of the main benefits of Puerto Vallarta’s location in the middle of Banderas Bay is that the mountains lovingly wrap around the city on all sides, providing a protective shield, which makes it one of the safest destinations to visit in Mexico during hurricane season. Even if a hurricane hits, the damage is usually fairly minimal.
When the weather starts to warm up, the ocean temperatures start to rise as well, which makes them perfect for water sports such as snorkeling and scuba diving because the higher temperatures allow the waters to be clearer, as there are no plankton blooms, which occur on the cooler months. Therefore, visibility improves greatly, which makes it the best season for exploring the rich marine life.
Summer is also sea turtle hatching season, and many hotels sponsor sea turtle protection projects that allow visitors to release baby turtles into the sea when they hatch, making this a one of a kind experience!

Also, the rainy season doesn’t typically start until the latter half of the month, so you won’t find it as humid as during the later summer months.
