One of the great things about traveling to Puerto Vallarta is that the airport is very close to the city. Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, also known as Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVR), is about 10 kilometers and a short 20 to 30-minute drive from the popular Zona Romántica. It will not take long to exit, depending on seasonality and customs, especially if you pack a carry-on bag.

At departure, within the airport you will find a decent amount of food and shopping options. In addition to the standard souvenir and duty-free shops, there are also clothing stores and convenience stores. The variety of food in the airport ranges from fast food spots to cafes and lounges, with a mix of international and Mexican cuisine.

Internet access, there is free airport WIFI however it does not always work. Patrons of the 3 lounges have access to unlimited free WIFI.

Transportation in Puerto Vallarta Mexico

If you are feeling adventurous and are comfortable with public transit, take the city bus into town. It is a short ride by bus, a great way to dive into local life, and is only 10 Pesos per ride. To catch the bus from the airport, simply exit to the left and walk to the pedestrian bridge. Do not cross the bridge. Stay on the same side as the airport. The destination for the bus will be marked on the front, however if you are not 100% sure it is the correct one, confirm the neighborhood you are heading to with the driver. Public transit can be jammed at peak times, so if you have heavy luggage or several bags, it might be easier to take a taxi or ride-share.

Taxis are also not metered and instead are priced by zones. Local taxis are more economical choice the airport services but you need to go across the pedestrian brige to get one. They can drop people off at the airport but cannot pick up at the terminal. they are a short 5 minute walk away from the exit doors. Remember the pedestrian bridge I mentioned for taking the bus? Walk over it and there you will find them at the bottom of the ramp.

Walking is an excellent way to see Puerto Vallarta. The Zona Romántica is a super walkable, central, and colorful location, for morning and evening strolls or even a jog, head to the kilometer-long El Malecón. It stretches from the Hotel Rosita at one end to the playful “Rotunda of the Sea” sculptures at the opposite. It is safe to walk along in the evening as there are lots of people nearby if you need assistance.

There are many cobblestone streets and uneven areas so leave the high heels at home. Instead, bring a cute pair of sandals or comfy runners that allow you to enjoy meandering.

The city bus is great for exploring farther than the Downtown / Centro. They run frequently and even extend beyond the city limits. Bus fares are 1-time use only, no transfers. When boarding as a group, the last person generally pays for everyone to speed up the process. Make sure you hold on to your ticket in case a fare inspector asks to see it.

Taxis are available and affordable in Puerto Vallarta. Tipping is not required in local yellow city taxis. Inquire to the driver, the cost of the taxi fare before your ride.

South of the Puerto Vallarta marina is the Hotel Zone where you’ll find the city’s all-inclusive hotels and big resorts. En él, un nuevo año comienza el 1 de Muharram (el primer día del primer mes sagrado), cuando aparece la primera luna creciente. Se eligió empezar a contar el 16 de julio de 622 en el calendario juliano para honrar el día en que Mahoma emigró de La Meca a Medina para establecer el primer estado islámico. El inicio del año 1446 en el calendario islámico, también conocido como calendario Hijri y que tiene solo 354 o 355 días por año, será el 7 u 8 de julio de 2024, dependiendo de en qué parte del mundo te encuentres.

La antigua Roma era una historia muy diferente. Los calendarios más antiguos conocidos, establecidos por el primer rey, Rómulo, empezaban en Martius (que luego se convertiría en marzo), coincidiendo con el momento en que los nuevos cónsules (el cargo electo de mayor rango) asumían el poder.

Pero solo duraba 304 días o 10 meses, con un período de invierno no asignado entre años. Alrededor del siglo VII a. C., el segundo rey de la antigua Roma, Numa Pompilio, añadió 50 días al año calendario para cubrir el período de invierno y dividió el año de manera desigual en 12 meses, añadiendo Ianuarius (para honrar al dios de los comienzos, Jano) y Februarius (para hacer referencia al festival de purificación llamado Februa durante ese mes). Hacia el año 153 a. C., la inauguración de los nuevos cónsules se trasladó a Ianuarius, aunque esto no fue fijo.

Puede que este calendario nos suene familiar, pero había una diferencia clave con respecto al que se usa en gran parte del mundo hoy: el calendario romano se basaba ostensiblemente en la luna, pero con un ciclo de fases lunares que duraba 29,5 días, el calendario a veces se desincronizaba hasta el punto de que había que introducir un mes adicional (Mercedonius) cada cierto tiempo para volver a la normalidad.

Cuando Julio César se convirtió en dictador de Roma en el año 46 a. C., pidió consejo a los astrónomos y al matemático Sosígenes para crear un nuevo calendario basado en el sol. En el año 45 a. C. se creó el nuevo calendario juliano, y el año civil en Roma comenzaba oficialmente el 1 de enero. El calendario juliano también introdujo un día adicional cada cuatro años (lo que ahora llamamos años bisiestos, como lo será el de 2024), pero sobreestimó la duración de un año solar en unos 11 minutos.

El calendario juliano se adoptaría en muchas partes de Europa a medida que el Imperio romano se expandía, pero su día de año nuevo no se mantuvo en todas partes. En gran parte de la Europa cristiana medieval, el día de Navidad, el 25 de diciembre, marcaba el comienzo de un nuevo año, mientras que en otros países caía el 25 de marzo, como parte de la Fiesta de la Anunciación.

Pero el error de 11 minutos del calendario juliano tendría un efecto acumulativo a lo largo de los años: a mediados del siglo XV, se había desviado del ciclo solar por 10 días adicionales. La Iglesia Católica notó este desajuste y en la década de 1570 el Papa Gregorio XIII introdujo un nuevo calendario que abordaría la discrepancia haciendo que ningún año centenario (es decir, 1700) tuviera el día bisiesto adicional a menos que el año fuera divisible por 400 (es decir, 2000). But the Julian calendar’s 11-minute error would have a cumulative effect over years: by the mid-15th century, it was off the solar cycle by an additional 10 days. The Catholic Church noticed this mismatch, and in the 1570s Pope Gregory XIII introduced a new calendar that would address the discrepancy by making it so that no centurial year (i.e. 1700) gets the extra leap day unless the year is divisible by 400 (i.e. 2000). The Gregorian calendar also formalized Jan. 1 as the start of every new year.

Much of the world came to accept the Gregorian calendar, noted for its accuracy. Still, Great Britain and its American colonies did not quickly adopt it, refusing to recognize the authority of the Pope. For nearly 200 years, Britons used both calendars and dated documents twice. By 1752, however, the two calendars were off by 11 days, and Parliament in London relented to abandoning the Julian calendar.

Even in many countries where the Islamic calendar or lunar calendar are culturally more prominent, the Gregorian calendar has now been widely adopted as the international-standard civil calendar for governments and businesses.

The Costalegre is that stretch of coastline that stretches south from Puerto Vallarta to Manzanillo. Costalegre translates to “joyful coast,” and it’s not hard to see why. The rough waves of the Pacific crash against miles of pristine golden sand. Mountains recede from the shoreline, covered in lush jungle. Groves of palm trees rise from low creek beds, creating a landscape that feels more like the remotest corners. It is beyond dramatic and completely unlike anything you think you know about Mexico.

It sounds like the perfect recipe for the beginning of the end: a blank canvas for all-inclusive resorts, restaurants, and nightclubs. However, unlike other destinations in Mexico, Costalegre has remained protected and deliberately low-impact for decades—yes, decades.

What makes Costalegre so unique is that this abundance of raw, wild nature is no coincidence. This isn’t a part of Mexico that hasn’t yet been discovered by glamorous hoteliers and deep-pocketed developers. Quite the opposite. Much of the coastline is owned by a handful of developers who control the surrounding area and, in collaboration with local governments and communities, have established rules and guidelines on how to protect the destination. Through their vision, Costalegre remains intentionally untouched and with the most intentional design. I call it Mexico’s “last coast” because Costalegre was developed to be undeveloped, and those who are its stewards make sure it stays that way for as long as possible.

Today, Careyes has evolved into a thriving residential and tourist community, a community of artists, writers, designers, and creatives. About 20,000 acres of land are protected by a sea turtle sanctuary, a school for the local community, uninhabited coves, and secret beaches. In fact, you wouldn’t know Careyes was there unless you knew exactly where to look, and that’s exactly how its residents and homeowners prefer it.

While preservation and conservation are the pillars of Costalegre, the area is anything but stagnant. Mexico is growing at a breakneck pace and Costalegre, while highly regulated, is certainly part of it.

La “Joyeuse Côte” de Jalisco ou Costa Alegre juste au sud de Puerto Vallarta

Explorer ses nombreuses plages secrètes, ses villages de pêcheurs endormis et ses criques tranquilles. En grignotant des tacos au poisson fraîchement grillé sous une palapa au toit de chaume. Trouver ces endroits au Mexique, c’est comme découvrir un trésor enfoui, et qu’ils ne restent jamais secrets longtemps.

Le Costalegre est cette partie du littoral qui s’étend vers le sud, de Puerto Vallarta à Manzanillo. Costalegre se traduit par « côte joyeuse », et il n’est pas difficile de comprendre pourquoi. Les vagues agitées du Pacifique s’écrasent sur des kilomètres de sable doré et immaculé. Les montagnes s’éloignent du littoral, recouvertes d’une jungle luxuriante. Des bosquets de palmiers surgissent des lits de ruisseaux bas, créant un paysage qui ressemble davantage aux coins les plus reculés. C’est plus que dramatique et complètement différent de tout ce que vous pensez savoir sur le Mexique.

Grâce à leur vision, Costalegre reste volontairement intact et avec le design le plus intentionnel. J’appelle ça la « dernière côte » du Mexique parce que le Costalegre a été développé pour être sous-développé, et ceux qui en sont les gardiens s’assurent qu’il reste ainsi aussi longtemps que possible.

Aujourd’hui, Careyes a évolué pour devenir une communauté résidentielle et touristique florissante, une communauté d’artistes, d’écrivains, de designers et de créatifs. Costalegre n’est pas nouveau. La soif de nouvelles destinations « non découvertes » n’est pas nouvelle.

Il vaut la peine d’être répété, Costalegre n’est aucun autre endroit que vous ayez jamais connu au Mexique auparavant, grâce à ceux qui en détiennent les clés. Et une fois que vous aurez fait l’expérience du Costalegre, il sera très difficile de revenir à autre chose.
