What Are the Islas Marietas?

The Islas Marietas are a small archipelago of uninhabited islets rising out of the Pacific at the mouth of Banderas Bay, roughly across the water from the Punta Mita peninsula. Geologically volcanic and shaped over millennia by wave erosion, the islands were declared a national park in 2005 and later recognized under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Program in acknowledgment of their unusually concentrated marine and bird biodiversity for such a small land area.

No one lives on the islands, and beyond Hidden Beach itself, stepping ashore is not permitted anywhere else in the reserve — the surrounding waters and cliffs are left undisturbed for nesting birds, coral, and marine life. Almost every visitor experiences the Marietas the same way: from a licensed tour boat, snorkeling mask in hand, camera ready for the crater beach reveal.

Good to know: You’ll often see the islands referred to as Islas Marietas, Marieta Islands, or Marietas Islands National Park — and Hidden Beach called Playa Escondida or Playa del Amor (Love Beach). They all mean the same destination.

Hidden Beach (Playa del Amor / Playa Escondida)
The park’s signature feature is a circular pocket of white sand sitting inside what looks, from above, like a collapsed volcanic crater open to the sky — with turquoise water lapping in through a rock tunnel at one end. Photographs of this crater beach have circulated so widely online that many travelers plan an entire Puerto Vallarta or Riviera Nayarit trip around seeing it in person.

Access is intentionally restricted. Visitors reach Hidden Beach by jumping from the tour boat a short distance offshore, then swimming through the tunnel entrance wearing a life jacket. Fins are not allowed on the swim, specifically to prevent contact damage to the surrounding coral. Once inside, you can wade, swim, and snorkel in the sheltered lagoon before swimming back out the way you came. Because of the swim and the confined entrance, the experience isn’t recommended for children under four years old.

1) Island & Snorkeling Tour (no Hidden Beach)
Covers the exterior beaches and reefs of the islands — including Playa La Nopalera, prized for its clear water and colorful fish — plus snorkeling around the rock formations. This option does not include the wristband required for Hidden Beach, but it’s a relaxed, family-friendly way to see the park.

2) Island Tour + Hidden Beach Access
The tour everyone asks for by name. Includes everything in the standard tour plus the guided swim into Playa Escondida/Playa del Amor. Because access is capped at roughly 116 people per day, this option requires advance reservations, especially in high season (December–April) and around Mexican holidays.

Because the park sits inside a protected federal reserve, independent boating is not an option — every visit runs through a licensed tour operator with an official park concession. Tours depart from several points around Banderas Bay and the southern Riviera Nayarit coast:

Punta Mita / Corral del Risco — the closest launch point; crossing time is roughly 30–45 minutes each way, making this the shortest overall tour.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle — a popular marina departure for Riviera Nayarit-based travelers.
Sayulita — a scenic, slightly longer crossing, often bundled with a morning in Sayulita town itself.

Marina Vallarta & Marina Puerto Vallarta — the longest crossing, but convenient for travelers staying in the Puerto Vallarta hotel zone or Zona Romántica.

Que sont les Îles Marietas ?

Les Îles Marietas forment un petit archipel d’îlots inhabités qui émergent du Pacifique à l’embouchure de la baie de Banderas, en face de la péninsule de Punta Mita. Géologiquement volcaniques et façonnées au fil des millénaires par l’érosion marine, les îles Marietas ont été déclarées parc national en 2005, puis reconnues par le Programme sur l’Homme et la biosphère de l’UNESCO en raison de leur biodiversité marine et aviaire exceptionnellement riche pour une superficie aussi réduite.

Personne n’habite sur les îles, et hormis Hidden Beach, il est interdit de débarquer dans toute la réserve. Les eaux et les falaises environnantes sont préservées pour la nidification des oiseaux, les coraux et la faune marine. Presque tous les visiteurs découvrent les îles Marietas de la même manière : à bord d’un bateau d’excursion agréé, masque et tuba à la main, appareil photo prêt à immortaliser la plage de cratère.

Bon à savoir : vous verrez souvent les îles appelées Islas Marietas, îles Marieta ou parc national des îles Marietas, et Hidden Beach, Playa Escondida ou Playa del Amor (plage de l’Amour). Tous ces noms désignent la même destination.

Plage Cachée (Playa del Amor / Playa Escondida)

L’attraction phare du parc est une petite crique circulaire de sable blanc nichée au cœur de ce qui ressemble, vu du ciel, à un cratère volcanique effondré, ouvert sur le ciel. Une eau turquoise s’y engouffre par un tunnel rocheux à une extrémité. Les photos de cette plage de cratère ont tellement circulé sur internet que de nombreux voyageurs organisent un séjour entier à Puerto Vallarta ou sur la Riviera Nayarit pour la découvrir de leurs propres yeux.

L’accès est volontairement limité. Pour rejoindre la Plage Cachée, les visiteurs sautent du bateau d’excursion à une courte distance du rivage, puis traversent à la nage l’entrée du tunnel, munis d’un gilet de sauvetage. Les palmes sont interdites pendant la traversée, afin de ne pas endommager le corail environnant. Une fois à l’intérieur, vous pouvez patauger, nager et faire de la plongée avec tuba dans le lagon abrité avant de repartir par le même chemin. En raison de la traversée à la nage et de l’étroitesse de l’entrée, cette expérience est déconseillée aux enfants de moins de quatre ans.

Deux excursions très différentes

1) Excursion sur l’île et plongée avec tuba (sans accès à Hidden Beach)

Cette excursion vous emmène à la découverte des plages et récifs extérieurs des îles, notamment Playa La Nopalera, réputée pour ses eaux cristallines et ses poissons multicolores, ainsi qu’à une séance de plongée avec tuba autour des formations rocheuses. L’accès à Hidden Beach ne nécessite pas le bracelet d’accès, mais cette formule est idéale pour une visite du parc en toute tranquillité et en famille.

2) Excursion sur l’île + accès à Hidden Beach

L’excursion la plus demandée ! Elle comprend tout ce qui est inclus dans l’excursion standard, ainsi que la baignade guidée jusqu’à Playa Escondida/Playa del Amor. L’accès étant limité à environ 116 personnes par jour, il est indispensable de réserver à l’avance, surtout en haute saison (décembre à avril) et pendant les jours fériés mexicains.

Saison des pluies/chaude : Juillet à octobre : Eau chaude, averses tropicales occasionnelles et houle ; vérifiez les conditions et les avis des opérateurs avant de réserver. Forte affluence du 20 décembre au 5 janvier, pendant la Semaine sainte (Semaine de Pâques). Réservez votre accès à Hidden Beach bien à l’avance : la capacité quotidienne de 116 personnes est rapidement atteinte pendant les vacances scolaires mexicaines.

Rappel : le parc national est fermé à tous les visiteurs les lundis et mardis toute l’année afin de préserver l’écosystème. Planifiez votre visite du mercredi au dimanche.

Comment se rendre aux îles Marietas

Le parc étant situé au sein d’une réserve fédérale protégée, la navigation indépendante n’est pas possible. Toutes les visites sont organisées par un opérateur touristique agréé, titulaire d’une concession officielle du parc. Les excursions partent de plusieurs points de la baie de Banderas et de la côte sud de la Riviera Nayarit :
Punta Mita / Corral del Risco : le point de départ le plus proche ; la traversée dure environ 30 à 45 minutes aller-retour, ce qui en fait l’excursion la plus courte.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle : un port de départ populaire pour les voyageurs basés sur la Riviera Nayarit.
Sayulita : une traversée pittoresque, légèrement plus longue, souvent combinée avec une matinée à Sayulita.
Marina Vallarta et Marina Puerto Vallarta — la traversée la plus longue, mais pratique pour les voyageurs séjournant dans la
