Can You Feel It? The Feel-Good Sound of Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit
Some places have a rhythm. Banderas Bay has one. This guide reads like a playlist, so you can feel your Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit trip before you book it.
By Ray, PromovisionPV travel guide, video producer and local since 25+ years · Updated October 27, 2026

Think about the last time a song changed your mood in three seconds. That is what Puerto Vallarta does. The sea breeze, the mariachi trumpet down the street, the smell of fresh tortillas and the warm light on Banderas Bay all hit at once.
Then you drive north into Riviera Nayarit, and the tempo shifts again. Slower. Barefoot. Sun-soaked. The question travelers keep asking is simple: can you feel it?
This guide is built around that feeling. Each section is a track on the playlist. Together they answer the big questions: where to stay, what to do, when to go, and how to make the trip feel as good as it sounds. I have been guiding and filming this coast for more than 25 years. Every link below goes to a deeper local guide on PromovisionPV.

Why Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit Feel So Good
Travel experts talk about “destination feeling.” It is the mood a place gives you before you plan a single thing. Puerto Vallarta has it in three ways.
First, it is easy. The airport is close to town. Many people speak English. The walkable downtown makes it simple to explore without a car.
Second, it is varied. You get a cobblestone town, a jungle, a bay and a mountain range in one trip. Whales, waterfalls, art galleries and beach clubs all live within an hour of each other.
Third, it is warm in every sense. Locals greet you. Strangers become friends at the bar. Many visitors come once and return for decades. Our guide Why Puerto Vallarta Vacation? What Is So Special explains why so many people fall for it.

Easy stroll
The Malecón Beat: Puerto Vallarta’s Seaside Boardwalk
Every trip should include an evening on the Malecón. This oceanfront boardwalk is the city’s stage. Sculptures line the path. Street performers set up as the sun drops. Families, couples and friends walk side by side.
You may hear a guitar, a marimba, a saxophone or a full band. You may see traditional dance and ritual performances. You will almost certainly see a sunset that makes the whole street go quiet for a moment.
Local tip: Arrive about an hour before sunset. Walk the full length. Stop for a fresh coconut water or an ice cream when you need a break.

Upbeat
Zona Romántica After Dark: Bars, Beach Clubs and Live Music
South of the Cuale River, Zona Romántica (also called Old Town) turns into a nightly party. Rooftop lounges glow. Bars open onto the street. Music spills from doorways in every style: salsa, rock, pop, house and acoustic.

Daytime is just as lively. Los Muertos Beach has a famous pier, beach chairs, volleyball and local vendors. Beach clubs around the bay mix lounge music, good food and swimming.
Not everyone wants a late night, and that is fine. Our guide Puerto Vallarta Bars Guide for Over 50’s Atmosphere highlights relaxed spots with great conversation. If you prefer sun, sand and a DJ, see Beach Clubs Puerto Vallarta to Discover Bars.

Puerto Vallarta is also one of the most welcoming LGBTQ+ destinations in Latin America. Everyone is invited to the dance floor.
Local tip: Locals start the evening late. Dinner at 8, drinks at 10, dancing after that.
Slow groove
Riviera Nayarit: Beach Towns With Their Own Rhythm
Drive north across the state line and the pace relaxes. Riviera Nayarit stretches along the Pacific coast with golden beaches, palm groves and small towns that each have their own personality. Here is a quick tour.
Nuevo Nayarit
Resorts, marinas and golf courses sit close to the airport. It is a smart base for families and couples who want comfort and convenience.
Bucerías
A beachfront town known for art, seafood restaurants and a friendly local scene. Many travelers pick it for a long stay.
Punta Mita
A peaceful peninsula with luxury stays, calm bays and surf breaks. A good choice for a quiet, high-end getaway.
Sayulita
Surf, color and music. Painted buildings, bohemian shops and beach bars with live bands. It has a lively, creative energy.
San Pancho
Small, artistic and community-minded. Think yoga, murals, local cafés and a mellow beach.
