Palo Maria Waterfalls Adventure. First vs Second Falls Just minutes from Puerto Vallarta, the Palo Maria waterfalls are one of the most popular and rewarding jungle hikes in the area and for good reason.
This adventure starts off fairly approachable. The hike to the first waterfall takes about 45 minutes, but do not expect a simple trail. You will be crossing the river multiple times, walking through flowing water, and scrambling over rocks along the way. It is not overly difficult, but you do need to take your time and stay focused—one wrong step on a wet rock and you could easily slip.
When you reach the first falls, it is all worth it. A beautiful cascade pours into a clear, green pool surrounded by towering rock walls and jungle. It is the perfect place to cool off, relax, and soak in the scenery. The water here is full of small fish, and you can often see them swimming around you as you float in the pool.
But this is where the adventure splits.
For many people, the first waterfall is the destination and it is an amazing one. But if you are up for more of a challenge, the second waterfall takes things to another level entirely.
Getting to the second falls is significantly more difficult and not for everyone. The terrain becomes steeper and more technical, and in some sections you will need to use ropes to climb up the rock face. This part requires confidence, balance, and a bit of upper body strength. If you are not comfortable with that kind of climb, it is best to enjoy the first falls and call it a day.
For those who do make the climb, the reward is incredible. The second waterfall feels more rugged and dramatic, with fewer people and a true sense of adventure. It is one of those places that makes you feel like you have really earned the view.
One of the highlights from this upper section is being able to reach the top of the first waterfall. From above, you can look down into the pool below and watch people swimming it is a completely different perspective that really shows just how beautiful this falls is.
Palo Maria is the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Whether you are stopping at the first falls for a swim or pushing on to the second for a more intense climb, this hike offers something for everyone and it is easily one of the best outdoor experiences near Puerto Vallarta.
