The Main Types of Tequila

Blanco (Silver / Plata)

Blanco tequila is unaged or rested for less than two months. It delivers the purest agave expression—fresh, crisp, and often peppery. This is the foundation of many cocktails and the best style for understanding true agave flavor.

Reposado (Rested)

Reposado tequila is aged in oak barrels for 2 to 12 months. The barrel aging mellows the spirit and introduces light notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak, while still allowing the agave character to shine.

Añejo (Aged)

Añejo tequila is aged 1 to 3 years, producing a smoother and more complex profile. Expect richer flavors such as toasted oak, chocolate, spice, and dried fruit. These are often enjoyed neat, similar to a fine whiskey.

Extra Añejo

Extra Añejo is aged over 3 years and represents the most refined style of tequila. These tequilas are slow-sipping spirits with deep complexity, silky texture, and a long, elegant finish.

Flavored Tequilas

Flavored tequilas are infused with natural ingredients like fruit, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, or chili. These are especially popular in tastings and are often crafted for easy sipping or dessert-style cocktails.

Worm, Scorpion & Snake Tequilas — Regional Significance

Tequilas and, more traditionally, mezcals containing worms, scorpions, or snakes are not random novelties. They are tied to specific regions and traditions in Mexico, particularly Mexcaltitán and surrounding areas, where these bottles are made as a regional signature.

Mexcaltitán, a small island community with deep cultural and historical roots, is associated with artisanal spirits that feature preserved creatures as a symbol of place, tradition, and identity.

The inclusion of a worm (gusano) originally signified strength, authenticity, and alcohol content in traditional mezcal.

Scorpions and snakes evolved as regional markers and symbolic additions, representing resilience, local wildlife, and craftsmanship rather than mainstream tequila production.

While these bottles are eye-catching and culturally significant, they are usually produced in small batches and are more about regional storytelling and heritage than everyday sipping.

Final Thoughts

This tasting experience added an incredible cultural layer to our ATV adventure—connecting flavor, history, and regional identity. Understanding where these tequilas come from and how they’re made makes the experience far more meaningful than just taking a shot.
