What Is the Malecón?
The word malecón in Spanish refers to a promenade, embankment, or path that runs parallel to the sea and in Puerto Vallarta, it is the definitive address for culture, cuisine, and coastal beauty. Stretching just over a mile (12 city blocks) from Hidalgo Park in the north down to the iconic Playa Los Muertos Pier in the south, the Malecón borders the sparkling waters of Banderas Bay and frames the city’s downtown, known as the Centro Histórico.

Originally built between 1935 and 1936, expanded through the mid-20th century, and dramatically renovated after Hurricane Kenna’s devastation in 2002, today’s Malecón reopened in 2011 as a fully pedestrian esplanade wider, shadier, and more beautiful than ever. Look closely and you’ll find hidden faces — including Charlemagne, the Aztec ruler Nezahualcoyotl, and even the face of Miss Jalisco 1998.

Nostalgia — Ramiz Barquet, 1984
The very second sculpture ever placed on the Malecón, and a symbol of local pride. A man and woman sit together on a white granite bench, gazing lovingly at each other and the sea. It remains the only public sculpture in Puerto Vallarta fully funded by its own residents — 42 local businesses and 11 individuals came together to make it happen.

En Busca de la Razón (In Search of Reason) — Sergio Bustamante, 2000
Arguably the Malecón’s most beloved and most climbed sculpture. Three surrealist balloon-headed bronze figures: a standing mother with open arms, and two children scaling a 6.80-meter staircase into the sky. The sculptor designed it as an interactive piece — and hundreds of tourists take him up on the offer every single day. Find it at the intersection of Corona Street.

La Rotonda del Mar (The Rotunda of the Sea) — Alejandro Colunga, 1996
A surrealist masterpiece considered the most important group of sculptures on the Malecón. Sixteen bronze figures — eight monumental, eight smaller — all serving as fantastical sea-creature chairs. Visitors are encouraged to sit and be photographed in their embrace. It was inaugurated just 30 minutes after its neighbor “Nature as Mother,” on a memorable December evening in 1996.

Lluvia (Rain) — Jovian, 2020
The newest major addition to the collection. A stunning 10-foot bronze figure of a young man stretching both arms skyward, palms open to receive the first drops of rain. It stands at the foot of El Faro Esplanade, the 34th artwork to join this extraordinary outdoor museum.

Each Tuesday from November through mid-April, gallerist Gary Thompson leads a free 2-hour sculpture walking tour starting at 9:30 AM at Los Milenios near Hotel Rosita.
