What Bugambilia Can Do for Your Health

Originally native to South America, bugambilia (Bougainvillea spp.) is a familiar sight across Mexico’s gardens, streets, and walls.
But those colorful, papery “flowers” aren’t what they seem. They are bracts, or modified leaves that surround the tiny white or cream-colored blooms in the center.
Those bracts also have a long history of use in herbal medicine. Traditionally, they’ve been brewed into tea for coughs and other respiratory symptoms. Bugambilia is also used for digestive complaints, including diarrhea, nausea, and stomach discomfort.
Bugambilia contains flavonoids and betalains (the natural pigments behind the bracts’ vivid colors). Studies on bougainvillea extracts have found antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activity. Early research has explored potential effects on blood sugar and cholesterol. However, more evidence is needed.
If you are picking your own, stick to the colorful bracts and watch out for the thorny stems—the sap can cause severe skin irritation.
Making bugambilia tea is simple:
Wash 3–6 fresh bracts with their small flowers attached
Bring 500 ml (about two cups) of water to a boil
Add the bugambilia and boil for 5 minutes
Remove from heat and steep for 10 minutes
Strain and add honey or lemon to taste
Some Mexican preparations add orange, cinnamon, or thyme. And it doesn’t have to be hot. Let the infusion cool, pour it over ice, add fresh lemon, or top it with agua mineral for a little fizz.

Aloe Vera: Beyond Skin Care

Most of us think of aloe vera as nature’s after-sun gel. But the clear gel inside those thick, fleshy leaves has been used medicinally for thousands of years.
Known as sábila in Mexico, Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) is far more than a sunburn remedy.
Mouth Health
Thanks to its antibacterial properties, aloe helps fight plaque and gingivitis. Studies found it works as well as chlorhexidine, the prescription mouthwash used to treat gum disease.
Aloe vera oral gel has even been used to treat chemotherapy-related mouth sores. Studies found it can ease pain, speed healing, and reduce the severity of oral mucositis, a common side effect of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. It may also help relieve common mouth ulcers.
Blood Sugar Support
Aloe may also help regulate blood sugar. Research suggests aloe may improve insulin sensitivity and help lower fasting blood sugar, particularly in people with prediabetes. Studies in people with type 2 diabetes have shown mixed results. It’s not a substitute for medication, but it’s a promising complement.
Digestive Health
Aloe has long been used to support digestive health. The yellow aloe latex beneath the leaf acts as a natural laxative, although it should only be used with caution. Early research also suggests aloe syrup may help relieve symptoms of acid reflux (GERD), while other studies are exploring its potential benefits for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Before You Try It: The aloe in your garden works well for topical use. Just do not ingest it raw.
Beneath the gel is a sticky yellow layer called aloe latex, which can irritate your stomach. It also has a strong laxative effect and may cause cramping or diarrhea. If you’re taking aloe internally, choose a product formulated for that purpose.
