A glimpse into the history of San Sebastián del Oeste

San Sebastián del Oeste’s history dates back to 1605. When silver and gold mines were discovered, it became one of the leading mining centers in New Spain. However, after the Mexican Revolution, it was slowly abandoned due to the closure of its mines.

Today, San Sebastian del Oeste has 800 inhabitants and has been known by its current name since 1983. Its main economic activities involve agriculture, stockbreeding, and increasing tourism.

The town’s architecture features elements inherited from traditional Spanish design, including its public squares, winding alleyways, original stone pavements, and wooden and tile roofs, all contributing to its unique character. The elevated southern part of town offers terraces with panoramic views of centuries-old rooftops, showcasing buildings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries that remain well-preserved today.
