Hiking to a hidden waterfall in Yelapa along the beautiful Río El Tuito trail. This lesser-known hike starts right from the beach and leads to one of the most peaceful waterfalls near Puerto Vallarta.
Most visitors to Yelapa only see the well-known waterfall inside the village, but there is another one farther up the valley along the beautiful Río El Tuito trail. This hike leads to a much more remote waterfall that far fewer tourists ever reach.
Starting right from the beach in Yelapa, the trail winds through the village and then continues past small farms, homes, and open countryside before entering a shaded forest along the river. The path is clearly marked and mostly sandy, making it a pleasant and scenic walk.
Along the way you cross the river three times — once on a suspension bridge and twice by foot, adding a little adventure to the journey. The last section requires scrambling over a few rocks to reach the river and the waterfalls, but it’s manageable and well worth it for the reward at the end.
This hike is about 4.3 km (2.7 miles) long and takes roughly 1.5 hours at a moderate pace. Wildlife is abundant along the trail and we saw chachalacas, macaws, lizards, and plenty of farm animals including cows, horses, burros, roosters, and chickens.
If you prefer not to hike, you can also reach the falls by renting a horse in the village for around 500 pesos.
