Furthermore, it is home to astonishing biodiversity; 99 species of birds, 46 of plants, 10 of mammals, and 29 of amphibians and reptiles have been identified there, as well as diverse species of fish and crustaceans that find refuge and food here.
Additionally, this mangrove plays a fundamental role in the environmental health of the destination. Its intertwined roots act as a natural barrier against flooding, help mitigate the effects of storms, and filter the water before it reaches the sea. Thanks to this, El Salado contributes directly to the protection of the beaches and the conservation of Banderas Bay.
This natural wealth makes El Salado a living classroom, ideal for environmental education, scientific research, and responsible nature tourism.
The El Salado Estuary also plays a key role in regulating the local climate. The mangrove vegetation helps capture carbon, cools the urban environment, and improves air quality, contributing to the well-being of both residents and visitors. Therefore, in 2000, it was declared a Natural Protected Area (NPA) under the category of ecological conservation zone. The Government of Jalisco, as part of its commitment to the conservation of natural areas, decreed in 2020 the expansion of the El Salado protected area from 168 to 208.2 hectares.

Protecting this estuary is not only about preserving a unique ecosystem, but also about safeguarding the natural identity of the destination and its future.
