The state of Jalisco has 125 municipalities, dozens of cities, hundreds of medium population centers, and thousands of small towns. Of this multitude of human settlements, less than ten reach the category of Magical Town for its cultural offer and its beauty.
To achieve the category of Magical Town, which consists of being part of a stimulus program developed by the Federal Secretariat of Tourism in 2001 that seeks to revalue a group of populations in the country that have always been in the collective imagination of the nation and that represent fresh and different alternatives for visitors from all over the world.
The magical towns have history and tradition, culture and legend, pure magic that confuses the streets and houses with dreams and that turn these towns into unmissable tourist attractions.
In Jalisco, Mazamitla, San Sebastián del Oeste, Tapalpa, Tequila, Lagos de Moreno, Tlaquepaque, Mascota, Talpa de Allende and Ajijic fall into this category and each one of them has its special charm.
Tequila
The agave landscape is enough to turn Tequila into a world of blue-green magic, but it also has unforgettable and perfectly preserved haciendas, restaurants, barrel-shaped hotels and, of course, white, reposado, aged and extra-aged tequila tastings, the traditional drink of Mexico. You can’t get much more magical than the town where the essence of Mexicanness is distilled.
Now there are twelve! Get to know the three new magical towns of Jalisco that were added to these destinations.
Mazamitla
In Mazamitla, the cobblestone streets, the wooden cabins and its flavor of a rustic mountain town surrounded by pine trees and clouds make the landscape that ideal country dream for those who like to rest in cold climates and surrounded by nature.
Tapalpa
Tapalpa, with its old paper mill that is now completely overgrown with weeds makes the place a true beauty with a mixture of ruins and vegetation. In addition to its kiosk, waterfalls, the famous “Piedrotas” and horseback riding in the forest.
San Sebastian del Oeste
San Sebastián del Oeste is a truly dream destination, originally a mining town nestled in the Sierra Madre Occidental, it gives the visitor the feeling of walking through a vintage watercolor or a painting of those that we have all seen where dawn rises in the town of white houses with tile roofs. Well, that little town, the one with all the paintings and all the imaginations has nothing to do with the absolutely palpable beauty of San Sebastián, a Magical Town that some call the best kept treasure in Jalisco and well, how beautiful it will be that it even smells to freshly ground coffee.
Lagos of Moreno
For its part, Lagos de Moreno, in the Altos Norte region, has a historic center of such heritage value and architectural beauty that UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage Site. Its doors wrought with Churrigueresque art and its Baroque-style parish church are as unmissable as the Temple of the Capuchins and the Agustín Rivera House Museum.
Mascota
Mascota is a town that, if it had not been founded, would have come from the pen of Juan Rulfo or in one of those it would appear on the maps near Macondo. It has that idiosyncrasy of an illustrious town that makes it unforgettable with tourist attractions such as El Pedregal Museum founded by the writer and collector Francisco Rodríguez Peña, and exhibits a large number of curious objects carved in stone.
Talpa de Allende
Talpa de Allende is the cradle of fervor in the mountains where among the bougainvilleas you can hear the ringing of the bells of the temples and pray to the Virgen del Rosario.
Tlaquepaque
The cradle of pottery is located in the capital of Jalisco and is one of the metropolitan municipalities of Guadalajara: Tlaquepaque. Where the artisan tradition is mixed with the joy of the mariachi and the same can be purchased clay objects, visit museums to eat in the Parián accompanied by mariachis and order a tequila while the sung philosophy of José Alfredo Jiménez plays and the afternoon dies.
Ajijic
Ajijic, the most recent magical town of Jalisco.
