The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor (CIIT) is an infrastructure and logistics platform project in southern Mexico that connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans through a rail, port, and highway system. Its objective is to boost the economic development of the south of the country by creating industrial zones and promoting global trade, linking the ports of Salina Cruz (Oaxaca) and Coatzacoalcos (Veracruz). The project is under the control of the Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR) and seeks to be an alternative to the Panama Canal for the transportation of goods and passengers.

Components and Operation
Railway and Port Infrastructure:
The CIIT includes the rehabilitation of railways, the modernization of the ports of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos, and the construction of complementary infrastructure.
Development Hubs for Well-being:
Industrial zones are established at strategic points along the corridor to attract investment and generate employment opportunities in sectors such as automotive, pharmaceutical, and agro industrial.

Connections to other projects:
The corridor is planned to connect with projects such as the Maya Train in Palenque and Puerto Chiapas to form a broader transportation network in southeastern Mexico.
Objectives and Impact
Economic Development of Southern Mexico:
The project seeks to boost the economy of the country’s south-southeast region, which has historically lagged behind.
Facilitation of Global Trade:
By offering a shorter route between the two oceans, the corridor seeks to become a strategic gateway for international trade.

Job Creation:
The creation of industrial zones and improved connectivity have the potential to generate thousands of jobs for the local population.
Key Aspects
Military Control:
Management of the project was delegated to the Ministry of the Navy, which has raised concerns about the militarization of the region and potential social tensions.
Environmental Impact:
The project recognizes the risk of negatively impacting the biodiversity of the region, which is considered one of the richest in the country.
