Visit Quimixto Beach Puerto Vallarta

Visit Quimixto Beach Puerto Vallarta. There is no shortage of incredible day trips you can take with local guides in Puerto Vallarta, but sometimes the best adventures are the ones you create on your own. Today, my friends and I set out to explore the stunning south coast of the Bay of Banderas, and it turned into one of the most memorable days I have had here.

We began with a morning walk through the city, admiring the architecture of the iconic Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, wandering along the River Cuale’s swinging suspension bridges, and taking in the mouthwatering smells of street vendors cooking breakfast. From there, we made our way to the bus stop at Constitution and Basilio Badillo and hopped aboard the bus to Boca de Tomatlán. It runs every ten minutes, weaving along the Sierra Madre mountains and coastal cliffs—a scenic 40-minute ride. Packed with locals, tourists, and expats, it was standing room only until about halfway, but that’s all part of the charm. It only costs 10 pesos.

Boca de Tomatlán is postcard-perfect: a golden sand beach, colorful restaurants, and a serene inner harbour filled with fishing boats and water taxis. It’s the kind of place you could easily spend the day, but we had other plans. For 100 pesos a person, we chartered a water taxi to Quimixto—once a quiet fishing village, now an increasingly popular hideaway.

After landing on the dock, we strolled through town and began the 2 km hike to what might be the most beautiful waterfall in the entire bay. The trail is accessible and easy, thanks to the work of local residents. Prefer not to walk? Horses and ATVs (guided by locals) are readily available. The hike itself was magical—lush flora and fauna, river crossings (a suspension bridge, wooden planks on sandbags, and even one crossing right through the water), plus a small local cemetery along the way.

At the waterfall, a small restaurant and bar offer drinks and snacks, but the true highlight is diving into the refreshing mountain pool. And in November, surprisingly, the water isn’t cold at all it is perfect.

After swimming and relaxing, we headed back into town and made our way to the beach on the east end of Quimixto. Two charming beachfront restaurants Charlie’s and Amaca—sit right on the sand. We chose Charlie’s this time and were blown away by the ceviche, tacos, fresh fish, and coconut shrimp. With margaritas, wine, cold beers, and a view made for postcards, lunch was unforgettable. A refreshing ocean swim afterward made it even better—calm water, easy access, and scenery you never get tired of.

At 3:30, the restaurant manager arranged a water taxi for us, but rather than heading straight back to Boca, the captain gave us a private tour of the Los Arcos Marine Nature Preserve. These dramatic stone islands are home to blue-footed boobies, pelicans, frigate birds, and more. We cruised past caves carved by the sea, even entering one for photos. Absolutely stunning.

Our journey ended in Mismaloya, a sheltered bay perfect for swimming with plenty of beachfront restaurants and a picturesque harbour. From there, we walked a short way up to the highway and caught the bus back to Puerto Vallarta—tired, sun-kissed, and already planning the next adventure.

What a day.
