Artists Francisco Calvillo and Carlos Miguel Ramírez received important recognition in a major ephemeral monumental art competition.
This summer, in the picturesque village of Les Verneys, hameau de Valloire Galibier, the 14th edition of the International Straw and Hay Sculpture Competition was held, one of the most important outdoor art events of its kind in Europe.
Each year, the competition brings together sculptors of various nationalities who transform natural materials into monumental works, fusing tradition, technique, and innovation to create ephemeral art. It is part of a broader cultural program in Valloire, which hosts snow and ice sculpture competitions in winter.
This year, the competition brought together 12 international teams, who used up to 600 kg of hay, 400 kg of straw, 75 m of wire mesh, wood, burlap, and fasteners to create monumental works born of their bold imaginations.
Over nearly six days, the sculptures—some reaching 6 meters in height—were erected on the Plateau des Verneys and then displayed to the public until All Saints’ Day.
In the Series 10 category, Mexico had a prominent participation thanks to the talent of Francisco Calvillo and Carlos Miguel Ramírez Pereyra, who, with their work titled “Rêve de liberté” (Dream of Freedom), captivated both the jury and the public.
Since 2008, Francisco Calvillo has exhibited his work as an independent artist on the Puerto Vallarta boardwalk, creating impressive sand sculptures, considered one of the city’s tourist attractions.
The Mexican duo distinguished themselves not only for their extraordinary artistic skill, but also for the joy and energy they conveyed throughout the competition. Their participation was rewarded with three important awards:
Young Public Award (Prix jeune public)
Public Award (Prix du public)
Second Jury Prize (2ème prix du jury)
This recognition reaffirms the talent and creativity of Mexican artists in global competitions and consolidates Puerto Vallarta’s cultural presence at high-level events, bringing the destination’s name to international stages.
