These amazing sculptures trace back to artist Pedro Linares, who dreamed of strange animals shouting the word “Alebrijes!” while he was sick in the 1930s. After recovering, he brought these creatures to life using papier-mâché, creating one of Mexico’s most unique art forms.
Today, artisans across Mexico — especially in Oaxaca — carve and paint these fantastical creatures with stunning detail and vibrant colors.

The Cool Story Behind Alebrijes
The origin of alebrijes is actually a wild dream story.
In the 1930s, a Mexican artist named Pedro Linares from Mexico City became very ill and reportedly fell into a deep fever dream. In that dream he found himself in a strange, colorful forest filled with bizarre creatures.
These animals were unlike anything he had ever seen — a donkey with butterfly wings, a lion with an eagle head, a rooster with horns, and many other strange hybrids. The creatures were brightly colored and patterned, and they kept shouting a mysterious word over and over:
“¡Alebrijes! ¡Alebrijes! ¡Alebrijes!”
When Linares recovered from his illness, he couldn’t get the creatures out of his mind. Using the traditional Mexican papier-mâché craft known as cartonería, he began sculpting the strange dream animals exactly as he remembered them.
People were fascinated. Soon his fantastical creatures became famous throughout Mexico.
Later, artisans in Oaxaca began carving their own versions out of wood and painting them with incredibly detailed patterns and bright colors. Today these carved figures are some of the most iconic folk art pieces in Mexico and are celebrated around the world.
Alebrijes even became internationally famous after appearing in the Disney/Pixar film Coco, where they are portrayed as colorful spirit guides.
