During the first quarter of the year, Puerto Vallarta’s Asipona Port welcomed 57 cruise ships, one less than the same period in 2024, and 63,434 passengers disembarked, representing an annual increase of 15.5 percent.
The Puerto Vallarta National Port System Administration (Asipona) plans to begin construction of a 40 million peso tourism and cultural services corridor this year to offer new experiences to cruise passengers and visitors arriving at the destination.

Furthermore, it is expected to be an additional attraction during next year’s World Cup, where Guadalajara will be one of the venues.
“As a result of a market study to identify business lines that could be developed within the facility (compatible with the purpose of the concession title), the feasibility of developing a botanical garden focused on the cultivation of different types of agave, their distillation process, and the production of tequila was determined,” it was reported.
Also planned is a museum, commercial spaces for the sale of local handicrafts, and an artistic expression center, with the goal of offering a cultural and tourist experience for both cruise ship visitors and the local community.

As part of the effort to generate increased activity at the facility attached to the Ministry of the Navy (Semar), the 2025-2027 Tourism Advisory Council for the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta was established last month. Representatives from the private sector participated and have a voice and vote in decision-making.
A Cruise Destination
According to Asipona, cruises are the main line of business and are part of the Mexican Riviera route, which includes the ports of Cabo San Lucas in the state of Baja California Sur and Mazatlán, Sinaloa.
This route consists of seven-day cruise itineraries departing from the U.S. ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Diego, California. These ports operate as home ports, primarily for cruise passengers from the United States, with smaller numbers of tourists from other countries in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
“Let’s remember that Puerto Vallarta has been recognized as one of the friendliest cities in the world. Without forgetting that we are the birthplace of Tequila and Mariachi, positioning us as the most avant-garde and excellent Mexican port. And we must strive for more,” the port administration reported.
Currently, the port has three berths to simultaneously serve three cruise ships of the highest specifications. Its purpose is tourism, which is why it boasts port infrastructure and specialized services directly related to maritime passenger transport and the tourism industry.
