Puerto Vallarta as a preferred destinations

Published on

The December festivities position Puerto Vallarta as one of the preferred destinations in the Mexican Pacific, with projections that anticipate the arrival of nearly 200,000 tourists between December 16, 2024 and January 6, 2025. According to the Tourism Trust for Promotion and Advertising, it is expected that of that number, 122,473 will be national tourists and 77,308 international, which reflects the importance of this season for the local economy.

Hotel occupancy is estimated at an average of 85.2%, with peaks that could reach 92% during the New Year celebrations. More than 466,000 nights of lodging are expected to be occupied, which highlights the constant preference of tourists for this destination.

In economic terms, the projected revenue for Puerto Vallarta amounts to approximately 3.88 billion pesos, based on an average daily expenditure of 9,058 pesos for national tourists and 35,831 pesos for foreign visitors. However, despite these promising figures, there is a widespread perception among local residents and businessmen that the high season is not taking off with the same intensity as in previous years.

This feeling has grown amid expectations of tourism growth, but so far, no authority has officially confirmed this analysis. Additionally, a study by Allianz Partners USA places Puerto Vallarta in fourth place of preference among American tourists for international travel during the 2024 holiday season, surpassing destinations such as Punta Cana and the Bahamas.

Air connectivity, which has more than 50 direct routes, together with the improvement in land infrastructure, such as the new highway to Guadalajara, contribute to consolidating Puerto Vallarta as an attractive destination.

As the season unfolds, the local tourism sector remains hopeful that visitor numbers will increase and perceptions of a slowdown will dissipate, allowing Puerto Vallarta to close out the year with record tourism numbers and a positive impact on its economy. Attention now turns to the market’s response in the days ahead and the city’s ability to attract and welcome the expected tourists.
