This destination will host a WTA Category 125 Tournament for the first time in its history.

From February 19 to 25 Puerto Vallarta is host the first edition of the WTA 125 category tournament, with the participation of more than 30 tennis players in a total of 50 matches.

The event will be held at Parque Parota -located in the heart of the northern hotel zone of Puerto Vallarta-, which has already hosted official tournaments of the ATP Tour, the men’s equivalent of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association).

With a purse of 125 thousand dollars, the WTA 125 in Puerto Vallarta will be the first tournament of the season in Mexico, which opens an important option for players to add points for their international classification.

The organization has announced the list of tennis players confirmed for the main draw. Topping the list is number one seed Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, champion of WTA 250 tournaments such as the Katowice Open in Poland, the BRD Bucharest Open in Romania and the El Claro Copa Colsanitas in Colombia.

The second seed is the American Taylor Townsend, current champion of the doubles title at Roland Garros and champion of the US Open in 2022 in the same modality. Townsend is a 3-time WTA 500 tournament champion, with two of her titles won during 2023.

Rounding out the top five are Yanina Wickmayer from Belgium, 5-time WTA 250 tournament champion; the Czech Linda Fruhvirtova, champion of the Chennai Open 2022; and the Swiss Viktorija Golubic, who will seek to win the title that eluded her in the semifinals on Mexican territory in 2021.

The Mexican tennis player Renata Zarazua, after her debut at the Australia Open 2024 and her recent entry into the top 100, will seek her triumph in her country. Emiliana Arango of Colombia, who reached the semifinals of the Guadalajara Open AKRON 2023, will also be present.

At a press conference held in the city council hall, Luis Villaseñor, director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust, said: “we are very grateful that an event of such relevance is coming to our destination, we hope it will be a strategic alliance of many years; “Puerto Vallarta is a sports tourism destination, we have already demonstrated it with the series of events we have in different disciplines and now with this important women’s white sport tournament.”

Gustavo Santoscoy Arriaga, director of the tournament, noted: “We sincerely thank the government of the State of Jalisco and also the local city council, for opening the door to us and for trusting us, this will be the first of many tournaments that will be held. out in Puerto Vallarta.”

The city of Puerto Vallarta is preparing to receive this women’s tournament with the best of its hospitality and warmth. In this way, Mexico continues to be the leader in women’s tournaments of the Women’s Tennis Association held in Latin America, as it has high-level tournaments in Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mérida, San Luis Potosí and, starting this year, Puerto Vallarta.
