For the second consecutive year, the Jalisco beach destination is the official host of a tournament on the WTA women’s professional tour.
From March 24th to 30th, more than 30 professional tennis players will compete in the second edition of the WTA 125 Puerto Vallarta Open, which has brought together leading figures in the sport, such as American Caroline Dolehide, finalist of the 2023 GDL Open AKRON (when she was a WTA 1000 player), and Australian Olivia Gadecki, the 2024 finalist of that tournament.
Also participating are Australian Daria Saville, who reached the semifinals at the 2025 Mérida Open AKRON, and her compatriot Maya Joint, who was a quarterfinalist there, as well as Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, champion of the 2023 WTA 125 San Luis Open, and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, winner of the 2021 Zapopan Open.
All of them are ranked in the top 100 of the WTA rankings and—due to their strong results in Mexico—are among the players to watch. The tournament, which is taking place this week on the hard courts of the Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center, will award a prize pool of $125,000.
Gustavo Santoscoy García, tournament director, shared his satisfaction at being able to hold this second edition: “Last year, we arrived at a new venue for women’s tennis, and the response was magnificent. We are very grateful for the support of all the authorities and sponsors; their trust and support make our work easier.”
He also spoke about the characteristics that make Puerto Vallarta a perfect venue for playing tennis. As one of the most attractive beach destinations in the Mexican Pacific, tennis players and attendees look to arrive early or stay later. “It’s not just a tennis event; we have to work with the Ministry of Tourism to make it a social, cultural, and gastronomic event. Puerto Vallarta is one of the most important tourist destinations in the country, which adds a lot to a tennis tournament,” he admitted.
For his part, Gustavo Santoscoy Arriaga, president of GS Sports Management, expressed his confidence that this tournament will contribute to the destination’s continued consolidation within the world of sporting events: “Sports tourism enhances tourist destinations; when it comes to tennis, four- and five-star hotels and excellent services are in high demand, so the economic impact is greater than at many other events.”
In the first edition of the Puerto Vallarta Open WTA 125, American McCartney Kessler took the singles title, while Mexican Renata Zarazúa emerged victorious in doubles alongside Iryna Shymanovic.
After its second edition, this tournament promises to consolidate its position and continue to be part of the great lineup of permanent sporting events that Puerto Vallarta offers throughout the year as part of its countless tourist attractions.
