Pilgrimages in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe (Las peregrinaciones católicas)
The pilgrimages in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe gather thousands of believers during the first 12 days of December. They take to the streets of Downtown Puerto Vallarta to show their faith and give thanks for the favors received during the year.
Up to 400 processions are registered in the program of the Fiestas Guadalupanas of Puerto Vallarta. In every one of these processions, the people of Puerto Vallarta pray to the Virgin of Guadalupe through a route which starts at 31 de Octubre Street and goes down Juarez Street to the altar of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
Carriages alluding to the apparition of the virgin on the hill of Tepeyac, groups of folkloric dancers, Mariachi and traditional live music accompany the most solvent pilgrims.

The Peregrinación de los Favorecidos (Pilgrimage of the Favored) is particularly important. With up to 20K people participating, this is the largest procession of all. The Pilgrimage of the Favored usually begins in the morning and continues for several hours on December 12.
Because they embody the collective identity of the community, the Fiestas Guadalupanas of Puerto Vallarta were declared “Intangible Heritage of the State of Jalisco” in 2018.

Catholic pilgrimages are sacred journeys to shrines or places of great religious significance (such as the Holy Land, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, or sites of Marian apparitions) that the faithful undertake out of devotion, petition, thanksgiving, or as an act of conversion and strengthening of faith, remembering that earthly life is a journey toward heaven, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Purposes and Meaning:
Encounter with God: It is a way to step outside oneself to encounter God in places where His grace has been manifested in a special way.
Experience of Faith: It seeks conversion, the forgiveness of sins, and profound spiritual growth, often with the possibility of gaining plenary indulgences, especially during Jubilees. Connection to history: They allow us to relive the steps of Jesus, the apostles, and the saints, and to connect with the tradition and culture of the faith.

Spiritual journey: Beyond the physical, it is an inner journey that reflects each believer’s path to holiness.
Characteristics: They can be individual or in groups, organized by dioceses, religious families, or thematic groups (such as groups for the sick).
Historically, they involved long walks, but today they are also undertaken by vehicle, maintaining the spiritual significance of the journey.
They are linked to rites, prayers, contemplation, and sometimes the veneration of relics.

Catholic pilgrimages are journeys, often on foot, that the faithful make out of devotion or as a vow to a shrine or place considered sacred. These journeys have a profound spiritual meaning and are seen as a metaphor for the Christian life’s journey toward heaven.
Purpose and meaning: The main objective of a pilgrimage goes beyond a simple physical journey. Its purposes include:
Spiritual renewal: It is an opportunity for reflection, penance, and personal growth in faith.
Encounter with God: Pilgrims seek to draw closer to God in places where He has manifested Himself in a special way, through His grace or miracles.
Demonstration of sacrifice and devotion: The effort and sacrifice of time and money associated with the journey are a way to express faith and fulfill promises or vows.
Connection with the history of faith: It allows believers to feel connected to important figures in Catholicism, such as Jesus, the Virgin Mary, or the apostles, by visiting the places where they lived or where sacred events occurred.
Search for forgiveness and answers: Many people undertake these journeys hoping to obtain forgiveness for sins, seek solace, or find answers to vital questions.
