The Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that during the first seven months of this year 2024, the arrival of tourists to hotel rooms was 48.9 million visitors, of which 35.2 million were national, representing 72.1% of the total, and 13.7 million were foreigners, representing 27.9% of the total in the 70 centers monitored by DataTur.
He reported that, from January to July of this year, hotel occupancy reached 60.2% in the total of the monitored centers, while, in city destinations, 52.8% was recorded, which in relation to the 52.2% recorded in the same period of 2023, means an increase of 0.7 percentage points, while, for beach centers, the occupancy level was 68.3%.
He noted that, from January to July 2024, the tourist centers that stand out for hotel occupancy are: Playacar with 89%, Akumal with 81.6%, Cabo San Lucas with 80.3%, Nuevo Nayarit with 80.2%, Cancun 77.2%, and Puerto Vallarta with 73.9%, being the destinations with the highest levels of occupancy.
For beach resorts, an average of 141,519 occupied rooms were registered, while in city destinations, the number of occupied rooms was 121,715, which represents an increase of 1.9% compared to the same period in 2023.
Torruco Marqués pointed out that from 2019 to 2023, 87 thousand new hotel rooms were registered in the country, which, added to the existing ones, give a total of 895 thousand rooms, which according to estimates, this year will exceed 900 rooms in 25 thousand lodging establishments, strengthening Mexico in the seventh position worldwide in hotel infrastructure in the different destinations of the country.
