It is said that many years ago, a young sailor fell madly in love with the lighthouse keeper’s daughter. Their gazes met across the immensity of the sea, and their love blossomed with each sunset they saw together from the top of the tower.

However, the girl’s father did not approve of her relationship. He believed that a sailor was not a good match for his daughter and forbade them to meet. The young sailor, desperate, promised to return a rich and successful man so he could ask for the hand of his beloved.
He set out on a long voyage, but a terrible storm surprised him on the high seas. His ship was wrecked and he was never seen again. The young woman, consumed by her sadness, went up to the lighthouse every night in the hope of seeing him return.

They say that on full moon nights, when fog envelops the bay, you can hear the sound of a guitar and see the silhouette of a man playing a melancholic melody. Some claim that it is the spirit of the young sailor, who still waits for his beloved at the top of the lighthouse.

August 15, 1932 marked a milestone in the history of Puerto Vallarta with the inauguration of the ‘OUTER’ and ‘REAR’ leading lights. Today marked the 92nd anniversary with an exhibition of historic ‘Twin Lighthouses’ photographs at the Matamoros Lighthouse, which will be on permanent display.

We thank the Colectivo Rompe @rmptodo, the Directorate of Tourism and Economic Development, the city Chronicle office, the City Hall Maintenance Department and Benjamín Moore for their invaluable support in this event, which celebrates and supports local talent vallartense.
