The hike from Boca de Tomatlán to Playa Las Ánimas is a scenic coastal trek that combines jungle paths, rocky sections and stretches along quieter beaches before you reach Las Ánimas.

Distance and duration

About 4–7.5 kilometers (2.5–4.5 miles) one way, depending on where exactly you start and finish.
Typical hike time is about 2 hours one way at a steady pace; most people plan 4–6 hours round trip with stops for swimming, photos, snacks and lunch.

Difficulty

Rated moderate. There are some inclines, rocky sections, stairs and uneven paths, so sensible shoes are recommended
You will walk through jungle, beaches and rocky coastal paths**; in places you might get wet or have to navigate around tidal areas.
Trail markings exist but can be sporadic, and cell signal is often weak — downloading a map or using a GPS track is useful.

What you will see along the hike

Playa Colomitos, small cove beach about 30–40 minutes in.
A series of smaller beaches and rocky coves with spots to swim or rest. Response times and scenery vary by season.
Jungle and coastal views of Banderas Bay.

Getting to the trailhead

Boca de Tomatlán is about 25–30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta by car, taxi/Uber or bus.
Local public buses from downtown Puerto Vallarta (e.g., from Basilio Badillo / Constitución) to Boca cost around 10 pesos.
If you arrive by water taxi from Puerto Vallarta, you will disembark at the pier in Boca and walk to the trail start.

Return Options

Once you reach Las Ánimas Beach, you have a few choices:
1- Hike back the same trail to Boca.
2- Take a water taxi (panga) back to Boca de Tomatlán — typically around 100–150 pesos per person.
3- Some water taxis offer direct rides back toward Puerto Vallarta, but fares may vary and advance planning is recommended.

Timing tips:

It’s advisable to start early in the morning to avoid midday heat.
Water taxi services may stop regular runs in the late afternoon. Plan your return accordingly or arrange a private transfer if needed.
