What is dengue and what are its symptoms?
It is an acute infection caused by a virus that can affect any age group. There are four varieties of dengue, with dengue hemorrhagic fever being the most serious.
It is possible for the same person to develop the disease four times, each time due to a different variety of the virus.
Dengue causes flu-like symptoms, such as fever, muscle and head aches, chills, nausea and vomiting. Sometimes it can develop into a potentially fatal condition, called hemorrhagic or severe dengue.
It is a widespread disease in tropical areas of the planet. Lately it has developed increasingly in urban areas, becoming a serious public health problem, along with Zika and Chikungunya.
Currently, more than half of the world’s population is at risk of contracting the disease. More than 390 million cases occur worldwide each year, of which 500,000 are the most serious type, hemorrhagic dengue, which causes some 25,000 deaths.
Jalisco is the state with the highest incidences associated with dengue
The National Plan against Dengue seeks to contain it and prevent a rise in the prevalence of this disease. Starting in February, the National Plan against Dengue will begin to be deployed in the country, which consists of a comprehensive strategy that seeks to anticipate the rainy season and reduce the incidence of this disease by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
The annual plan against dengue will start in February-March, but in April insecticides will be provided with the transfer of resources. In May, targeted actions will be implemented by distributing larvicides, intra-domiciliary spraying and nebulizations. From June to December, actions are intensified where there is presence and entomological risk, and the hibernation of a mosquito infected with a bacteria so that it infects other mosquitoes that may not be transmitters of the disease.
Previously, dengue was associated with the coastal areas of the country, but currently cases are also reported in urban areas. The entities with the highest incidence are: Jalisco as number one, followed by Nuevo León, Michoacán, Guerrero and Veracruz.
It is important to note that the symptoms of contagion are: high fever, headache, usually behind the eyes; muscle and bone pain, which in the communities is known as break bone fever or break bone pain, due to the amount of pain it produces.
It is recommended not to self-medicate to treat the symptoms, nor to use medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or ketorolac, as they increase the possibility of dengue becoming complicated and causing hemorrhages.
