Hurricane Polo explosive rise to Category 5 appears to set Pacific record
Hurricane Polo exploded into a Category 5 storm early Tuesday morning, apparently setting a new record for intensification speed and threatening parts of Mexico with dangerous weather conditions.
Polo went from a 40 mph tropical storm to a 160 mph Category 5 monster in just 36 hours, which would be the fastest such development recorded in the eastern Pacific.
The storm is expected to remain a major hurricane through the rest of the week. Although its core is forecast to remain offshore, southwestern Mexico faces dangerous rainfall, wind and surf.
Hurricane Polo reach Category 5 Pacific Record
Polo was about 220 miles south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, at 5 a.m. PDT Tuesday, moving east. The National Hurricane Center expects additional strengthening through Tuesday night, with a sharp turn toward the northwest.
Exceptionally warm ocean water, light wind shear and abundant moisture have fueled Polo’s explosive strengthening. Forecasters described its intensification as “truly remarkable” early Tuesday.
Polo could bring heavy rain, rough surf and tropical-storm-force winds to parts of Mexico late Tuesday into early Wednesday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.
