Do travel motivations change over the years? Through its most recent survey, Booking.com revealed the behavior and preferences of Mexican travelers based on their experiences over the past year and their travel plans for the next 12 months.
How do Generation Z and older adults travel ?
According to this study, the priorities and expectations of Mexican travelers were identified by age, and the results show a clear generational contrast: while some seek tranquility and sunsets on the beach, others follow TikTok creators to decide their next destination.
18 to 24 years old: connection with nature… and with social media
Gen Z have a different vision of travel. 21% choose rural areas with nature and comfort food, showing a penchant for authentic and spiritual experiences. But the way they discover these destinations also speaks to their generation: 40% use Reels and TikToks as a source of inspiration when deciding which places to visit, and 39% consider it essential to check out the destination’s restaurants before traveling.
65+: Beaches, Silence, and Complete Rest older adults travel
For many older adults, traveling means completely disconnecting. In fact, 67% of Mexican travelers over 65 seek quiet destinations, while 66% prefer beach locations where they can go into “airplane mode” and relax without distractions. This need for calm is complemented by a love of small pleasures: 50% of them seek simple but meaningful activities like watching sunsets on the beach, escaping from rushed or over-planned tourism.
“What we see in this data is that, depending on their stage of life, Mexican travelers prioritize different emotions and experiences: from tranquility and connection with nature to digital inspiration and culinary discovery.
These findings reveal how tourism is no longer a single experience, but a spectrum that changes with each stage of life. From those seeking absolute peace to those looking for the best photo or dish to share on social media, the perfect trip is as diverse as the people who take it.
