Hotel in Puerto Vallarta receives top Michelin distinction

The Michelin Guide revealed the new One, Two and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in Mexico.

The Xinalani eco-boutique hotel, located on Quimixto Beach – which can only be reached by sea – has earned the ‘Three Key’ distinction from this famous guide, being one of only three hotels in all of Mexico to achieve this.

Most rooms at Xinalani are built high into the mountains that rise over this expanse of Mexico’s Pacific coastline, offering crisp breezes and spectacular ocean views. Better yet, most rooms rely on just three walls and a palm-thatched roof, removing the threshold between nature and the built environment. It’s a serene setting that befits a resort known as a top-class yoga retreat, although it provides the same peace of mind for guests seeking no more than to stretch out on a quarter mile of private beach.

Located 12 miles outside of Puerto Vallarta, the retreat is accessible only by boat, creating a respite a world away from the resort town din, while in living spaces the aesthetic is bohemian and minimalist, with natural finishings and cozy textiles that emphasize the essential value of simplicity. Expect large, open-air showers and sophisticated tatami-style chairs.

Also in Puerto Vallarta, the Bellview Boutique Hotel,

A boutique hotel doesn’t have to be a design hotel, in the modern or contemporary sense — any hotel that’s modestly sized, memorable, and presents a unique point of view on its setting qualifies as a boutique hotel, in our book. Puerto Vallarta’s BellView Boutique Hotel fits the bill, even though its style is antique from top to bottom. For while there are plenty of bigger and more contemporary hotels in this town, there’s nothing else like BellView, whose four rooms and suites are overflowing with the sort of historical elegance that’s in painfully short supply around here.

Ironically, it’s set in a city-center neighborhood nicknamed “Gringo Gulch,” just a few blocks up the hill from Banderas Bay and the beaches. The views, naturally, are among its charms, as the sun sets more or less straight out to sea. It’s a fine setting from which to get out and explore a more authentic side of Puerto Vallarta than you’ll find in the hotel zone a mile to the north. And it presents a strong case for staying in, at least for dinner: La Cappella is the open-air restaurant, serving contemporary Italian fare accompanied by a generous selection of wines and cocktails.

Casa Kimberly and

This lovely pair of adjoining villas in Puerto Vallarta was once home to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton — and while the connection is part of its charming history, and its most lavish suite bears Ms. Taylor’s name, what’s important about Casa Kimberly is the sheer extravagant romance of the place as it stands today. The suites are all different, but all are exceedingly comfortable and elegant in a way you have to imagine Ms. Taylor would have approved of. There’s a small spa with a pair of treatment rooms, and the Iguana is the open-air restaurant and tequila bar with a view of the city and the bay.

Hacienda San Angel hotels achieved the ‘One Key’ distinction.

Puerto Vallarta was, at one time, among the most glamorous of Mexican destinations — and though it fell victim to overdevelopment, it’s never completely lost its magic. These days there’s a bit of a resurgence at hand, with a few absolute gems among the big hotels. One of the better examples is the Hacienda San Angel, which makes one little sacrifice — no beach access — in exchange for a measure of privacy and exclusivity that just might be without equal anywhere in town.

Calling it a hotel might be a bit of a stretch. This is really a handful of luxe townhouses, stitched together into a single property — and including one villa that was once the residence of the actor Richard Burton. Each villa is divided into three to five suites, and each suite is as lavish as they come — while they may lack the bells and whistles of a 21st-century five-star hotel, they more than compensate with their hard-won historical atmosphere and their old-fashioned creature comforts.

Think low-tech, low-maintenance, yet always high-end — the views from poolside are stunning, and the cuisine makes it a draw for savvy local diners. You could certainly find a bigger and more modern luxury hotel — but why?

The “Michelin Keys” are awarded to accommodations that contribute significantly to the traveler’s experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting.
