What to Do in Tehuamixtle

Additionally, during certain seasons, you can spot dolphins, manta rays, and sea turtles, thanks to the hard work residents have put into protecting their natural resources.

Keep in mind that the climate in this region varies throughout the year. June and August are the months with the highest temperature, averaging 30°C (86°F); while January is the coldest, with air and water temperatures of 22°C (72°F).

Culinary Experience

One of Tehuamixtle’s culinary specialties is its giant oysters. Since 2024, the town has celebrated the Oyster Festival in May, a culinary heaven where you can enjoy tastings, culinary demonstrations, music, and other regional symbols, in addition to the world’s largest oyster contest.

The town has several restaurants serving fresh seafood dishes that also stand out for their delicious lobsters, cocktails, and an extensive menu steeped in tradition.

This is the ideal place to enjoy a meal on the beach while enjoying the scenery and the natural tranquility of the tide.

The town of Tehua is a fairly small town surrounded by nature, with a few hotels, restaurants, and small shops. The purpose of visiting this place is to disconnect from the city and connect with nature.

Towards the south of town, the beach offers the perfect retreat for those seeking privacy and tranquility. This place is a true paradise for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a natural environment.

The coastline of Tehuamixtle Beach is covered with golden sand. It is very clean, with a pure, unbleached surface. The entry into the water is gentle, the bottom comfortable, and there are rarely strong waves.

Strong Waves at Mayto

Just a few minutes’ drive from Tehuamixtle is Mayto, another coastal destination that perfectly complements the experience of visiting Tehua. The waves are stronger, making it a popular spot for surfers.

Its wide, pristine beaches also offer a more dynamic and adventurous experience. You can enjoy walks between both towns, taking advantage of the different activities and landscapes each offers.

How to get to Tehua by Car (there is no public transport to Tehua)

To get to Tehuamixtle from Puerto Vallarta, the recommended route takes you south, starting with a drive of approximately 17 km to Boca de Tomatlán. This section typically takes around 30 minutes and offers stunning views of the coast, notable for its natural beauty.

From Boca de Tomatlán, continue to El Tuito, located approximately 27 km further south. The trip on this section typically takes between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic and road conditions. In El Tuito, you can make a quick stop for a meal before continuing.

After El Tuito, follow the signs to Mayto, which is approximately 45 kilometers away, another 60 minutes. This additional section of the route will take you through mountainous and rural landscapes characteristic of the region, offering a different perspective on the Jalisco environment.

Finally, from Mayto, continue approximately 8 more kilometers until you reach Tehuamixtle. This final leg of the journey will take you directly to the charming coast of Tehuamixtle, where you can enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and fresh seafood cuisine.
