One of them is located just minutes from the tourist strip; we’re referring to the central area of the El Pitillal district, a typically Mexican, conservative town that was elevated to that status in 1975.
The community, which was formed by people from neighboring municipalities, initially based its economy on the harvesting of coquito oil palms. Later, it shifted to agriculture and livestock farming, and today its growing working population depends on commerce and tourism.
It is said that the town’s name derives from the proliferation of a plant that grew along the riverbank, known as pitiyios. Thus, both the river and the town were named El Pitillal, a place that retains its old-world charm.
Today, it offers a wide variety of shops and businesses of different styles, inviting you to stroll along its cobblestone streets while enjoying a delicious agua fresca or a refreshing tehuino. And when your appetite whets, you can savor a delicious elote (corn on the cob), crepes, or the traditional birria and tortas ahogadas (drowned sandwiches).
A must-see is the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, with its unique architecture and imposing wooden sculpture of the resurrected Christ. And the central plaza in front of it, where the patron saint is celebrated each year with one of the region’s most traditional festivities. The plaza comes alive with color, music, street food, carnival rides, and a noticeable increase in commerce.
Local business owners and authorities launched the project called “Economic and Cultural Revitalization of El Pitillal,” aimed at highlighting Vallarta’s folklore and traditions through fairs, festivals, and cultural events such as public speaking and dance performances.
The area is attractive to tourists, who have the opportunity to visit leather workshops, traditional sandal shops, vendors of regional sweets and Mexican snacks, and even enjoy regional dance performances and other activities in the Main Plaza.
