Holy Week 2025 will be celebrated from April 13 to 20, beginning with Palm Sunday and concluding with Easter Sunday.
Although the most important days are from April 17 to 20, the SEP school calendar grants two weeks of vacation for students. Why is this? Here we explain, along with the key dates of Holy Week, the days that workers are allowed to rest according to law, and the importance of each religious holiday.

When is the Holy Week 2025 vacation period?
Holy Week is a Christian religious celebration that commemorates the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In 2025, it will take place on the following dates:
Holy days of Holy Week 2025:
Palm Sunday: April 13
Holy Thursday: April 17
Good Friday: April 18
Holy Saturday: April 19
Easter Sunday: April 20
Why are there two weeks of vacation if Holy Week lasts only one?
The 2024-2025 school calendar published by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) establishes a vacation period from Monday, April 14 to Friday, April 25, 2025, which grants two full weeks of rest for elementary school students in Mexico. Why is this?
The SEP seeks to facilitate family planning and domestic tourism, which is why it is customary to extend the vacation period to one week before and one week after the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). This not only serves religious purposes, but also economic and logistical ones, allowing families to make better use of their days off.
Brief Description of the Holy Days
Below, we briefly explain what each of the most important days of Holy Week represents:
Palm Sunday (April 13):
Marks the beginning of Holy Week. It commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where he was welcomed with palm branches. In Mexico, palms are blessed in churches as a symbol of faith and protection.

Holy Thursday (April 17):
Recalls Jesus’ Last Supper with his apostles, where he instituted the Eucharist. The washing of feet is also celebrated as a symbol of humility and service.
Good Friday (April 18):
This is one of the most solemn days. It commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Many communities in Mexico hold Stations of the Cross processions.

Holy Saturday (April 19):
Day of mourning and anticipation of the Resurrection. In ancient times, it was celebrated with the traditional “burning of Judas” and cold baths, although many of these practices have been reduced or regulated.
Easter Sunday (April 20):
Also called Easter Sunday, it is the central celebration of Christianity: the resurrection of Jesus. It represents the triumph over death and sin.
