Here we tell you the differences. Mariachi and charro costumes are recognized worldwide for their unique design that highlights the culture of Mexico, but both have a different essence
As part of Mexican culture, it is important to recognize aspects that characterize mariachi and charro costumes.
When some foreigners who are discovering or getting to know Mexican culture, have come across certain things that highlight the essence of the country: Its food, the spicy food, the Day of the Dead; its beaches, the music, among others; and perhaps they will wonder what the typical clothing of every Mexican is really like.
It is well known that each country has clothing that highlights its culture, but that does not mean that such clothes are used every day or during the performance of some daily activity. In the case of Mexico, not only aspects such as its gastronomy or magical towns are rescued, but also that culture that has earned it several recognition worldwide.
Part of this culture is complemented by costumes, something that highlights the wonder with which an event is carried out, with mariachis and charros being an example of them. Almost everyone has heard about them; mariachis, the image of a group of people (mainly men) singing a repertoire of songs through their particular instruments in which Mexican music is highlighted. On the other hand, charros, horsemen who display equestrian skills that include riding techniques and cattle handling.
However, something else stands out in both: their striking outfits. Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a mariachi and a charro outfit?
It is commonly known that the mariachi outfit is inspired by charro outfits, but it has certain particularities that differentiate it from the other. First, the mariachi outfit is an outfit with a musical twist that is free, flexible and decorative, that is, there are no official guidelines that they follow, and they can use shades of colors that they find very striking. In the case of the charro suit, it must be attached to formality, with thick fabrics that can serve to cushion falls or incidents during the tasks.
Some of both outfits have details that differentiate one from the other, such as the tie.
Later, the hat of a mariachi is characterized because its crown has two depressions on the sides and does not provide protection. The charro hat has a completely flat front brim and two stones and four slits on the crown.
Another element to differentiate between both suits is that the mariachi tie is a sewn and embroidered bow that is in tune with the style that he wants to project; while the charro tie is a strip that ends in fringes and can be used as a tourniquet if the reins were to break.
Example of a charro gala suit, which has a different design than the typical mariachi suit.
Another difference between the two is that the buttons on the mariachi jacket are made with musical motifs and are usually gold or silver plated. The charro buttons are made with farm work motifs: horseshoes, horses, bulls, among others, and include the initials of the wearer.
And finally, the mariachi boot is usually the shade of the suit chosen by the performer to achieve a color combination; in the case of the charro boot, these are usually with a bolero-type heel, and are made as a single piece, and must be brown, black or suede.
Now that you know how to distinguish both charros and mariachis, you will know that each one has a bearing that makes it unique, and although it may seem like a similar subject for some people, the most fundamental thing that both outfits share is the way of showing that spark that Mexican culture has, in which through music or competitions, the wealth that is experienced in every corner of these lands is made evident.
