Circular Pyramids of Teuchitlán Hidden Circular Pyramids of Teuchitlán, Guachimontones + The Fire Tour from Guadalajara

Step back in time on an unforgettable day trip from Guadalajara to the mysterious pre-Columbian ruins of Guachimontones in Teuchitlán one of Mexico’s most unique and lesser-known archaeological sites.

Circular Pyramids of Teuchitlán

As part of The Fire TOUR Pyramids, Volcanoes, Agaves & Tequila, we explored the ancient circular pyramids of the Teuchitlán culture, guided by experts in Mexican history, art, and culture. Unlike the more famous step pyramids of Chichén Itzá, these structures are incredibly rare built in concentric circles and believed to have been used for ceremonies, rituals, and community gatherings.

Our guides brought the past to life, explaining how this region, now known as the Tequila Valley was once home to a thriving civilization long before Spanish arrival. From volcanic landscapes to agave fields, this journey blends history, culture, and stunning scenery into one unforgettable experience.

If you are visiting Guadalajara and want something beyond the typical tourist stops, this is an absolute must-do!

History of Guachimontones & Teuchitlán

The archaeological site of Guachimontones dates back to roughly 300 BCE to 900 CE and was built by the Teuchitlán tradition, an advanced pre-Columbian culture unique to western Mexico.

What makes this site truly special is its circular pyramid design, unlike anything else in Mesoamerica. These structures consist of a central altar surrounded by concentric rings and platforms, thought to represent cosmological beliefs and possibly used for ceremonies, including the famous volador (flying pole ritual).

The region flourished due to fertile volcanic soil and access to trade routes, allowing the people to develop complex societies with distinct architecture, agriculture, and religious practices. After around 900 CE, the site was gradually abandoned for reasons still debated—possibly environmental changes or social upheaval.

Today, Guachimontones remains one of Mexico’s most fascinating hidden gems, offering a rare glimpse into a culture that once dominated the Tequila Valley.
