The History of Blown Glass in Jalisco
The blown glass technique arrived in New Spain in the 16th century, first establishing itself in Puebla. From there, it spread to other regions of the country, including Mexico City, Oaxaca, and, of course, Jalisco.
Since then, mainly in the municipalities of Tonalá and Tlaquepaque, blown glass has achieved great relevance, and they are considered the most important centers of artisanal production.
One of the pioneers of this art was Odilón Ávalos, who arrived in Guadalajara in 1903 from his hometown of Puebla. He began his career making bottles for the region’s tequila producers.
This Puebla native with a Jalisco heart expanded his work to create decorative and utilitarian pieces. Along with other masters of the craft, he helped consolidate Jalisco as a benchmark in glassblowing production.
What does the glassblowing technique involve?
The process begins when silica sand or glass is melted in furnaces at high temperatures to obtain a dense, malleable mass. The artisan then collects this mass with a metal tube and, by blowing through it, creates an air bubble.
From there, using tweezers and scissors, the desired piece is shaped, be it a vase, a figurine, jewelry, or any other object. Finally, the piece is kiln-fired again to achieve strength and durability.
Although this process sounds simple, it requires great skill and precision, something only experienced glass makers can master. Here in Mexico, it began to be used in colors typical of the region, such as flag green, Mexican pink, and cobalt blue.
Today, some factories use machinery to automate part of the work, but the artisanal touch remains essential to obtaining unique, high-quality products.
Glassblowing: An Art That Endures in the State
Jalisco continues to be an epicenter of glassblowing, with Guadalajara, Tonalá, and Tlaquepaque as the main producing cities. Here, artisans continue to innovate and keep this ancient technique alive.
New generations who continue the tradition of this craft add elements of Mexican culture to each piece. This technique has also been reinvented in Jalisco to integrate sustainable methods and contemporary designs.
