Wild Encounters in Mismaloya: A Day at Puerto Vallarta Zoo
Just south of Puerto Vallarta in the lush jungle of Mismaloya sits one of the area’s most surprising attractions, the Vallarta Zoo.
Getting there is easy. You can hop on a bus, grab a taxi, or take an Uber from Puerto Vallarta. If you take the bus to Mismaloya, it is less than a 1 km (0.6 mile) walk from the stop to the zoo entrance, a short stroll that builds the anticipation as you head into the greenery.
The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals, big cats, primates, exotic birds, reptiles, and more. What really stood out to us is that approximately 65% of the animals were taken in by government officials for their protection and safety. Many were rescued from unsafe conditions and are housed here until more permanent accommodations become available. That adds a meaningful layer to the experience, it is not just a zoo visit, it’s a place of refuge for many of these animals.
We saw tigers, a beautiful jaguar, giraffes, flamingos, monkeys full of personality, impressive birds of prey, and even giant tortoises. The variety keeps things interesting around every corner.
Entry was 300 pesos per person, and we decided to purchase a 100 peso bag of food so we could feed some of the animals. That interactive element made the visit even more memorable being able to safely feed certain animals adds a hands-on experience you don’t always get.
Overall, we absolutely loved our day there. It’s an easy excursion from Puerto Vallarta, especially if you’re already exploring the south shore, and it offers a chance to see and learn about animals up close in a jungle setting.
If you are in the area and looking for something a little different, this is definitely worth adding to your list.
