With the start of sea turtle release season, Puerto Vallarta invites visitors to be part of one of the most moving nature experiences the destination offers: witnessing the beginning of the life cycle of these ancient reptiles, as the tiny hatchlings crawl across the sand toward the ocean.

Every year, between summer and winter, the beaches of Puerto Vallarta welcome thousands of sea turtles that come to lay their eggs. Many of the eggs are protected by conservation programs at turtle camps dedicated to this work. After approximately 50 days of incubation, the hatchlings emerge from the nests and it’s time for their release, usually at dusk, when conditions are most favorable for their journey to the sea.
This activity offers families, couples, and nature-loving travelers an opportunity to get up close to these sea turtles, participate in efforts to protect these species, and enjoy an authentic experience that connects visitors with Puerto Vallarta’s natural heritage.
Among the sites where it’s possible to participate in or observe these activities is the Boca de Tomates Turtle Camp, located north of Puerto Vallarta, where protection, incubation, and hatchling releases take place. During the 2025-2026 season, this camp protected more than 36,000 eggs and successfully released 30,864 sea turtle hatchlings.
Conservation efforts also extend to various hotels in the bay that have their own programs or collaborate with camps and specialized organizations. Among them are Marriott Puerto Vallarta, The Westin Playa Vallarta, Sunscape Puerto Vallarta, Hyatt Ziva, Hotel Rosita, El Pescador, and Velas Vallarta, properties that incorporate turtle protection and, in some cases, their release as part of their guest experiences.
For those who wish to experience this during their visit, there are also specialized operators such as Ecotours Vallarta, which offer conservation tours led by trained guides and provide insights into the biology and life cycle of sea turtles.
The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board encourages visitors to check directly with each camp, hotel, or operator regarding activity availability, dates, times, and participation requirements, as releases depend on nest hatching, beach conditions, and other natural factors.
