BLUE MARLIN MONSTER! Off of Puerto Vallarta. “Four grown men… one giant marlin… and a fishing story that sounds completely made up.”
We left the marina in Puerto Vallarta before sunrise aboard the Burton with Captain Mario, expecting a fun day offshore. What we got instead was the fishing fight of a lifetime.
After a 1.5 hour run out of the Bay of Banderas, past the beautiful Marietas Islands and another 4 miles into deep Pacific water, the lines had barely settled before chaos erupted. The reel screamed, the rod bent in half, and suddenly we were hooked into an absolute MONSTER blue marlin estimated at over 500 pounds!
What followed felt less like fishing and more like a real-life battle against Moby Dick. For FOUR HOURS we took turns fighting this beast. Every time we thought we had it beat, the fish would rise toward the boat, we would finally see the leader… and then WHOOSH — another massive run stripping hundreds of feet of line back into the ocean. Again. And again. And again.

At one point we honestly started wondering if the marlin was towing us back to shore.
Then came the craziest part of the entire trip… the fish suddenly stopped. No giant run. No jumping. Nothing. It apparently had the marlin equivalent of a heart attack and sank straight down under the boat with more than 400 feet of line out!
The reel drag could not even support the dead weight of this giant fish, so instead of “reeling it in,” we basically turned into an offshore tug-of-war team manually hauling this sea monster back to the surface inch by inch. Somewhere during hour four, this fishing trip became a full-body workout nobody signed up for.

Puerto Vallarta is one of the best sportfishing destinations in the world, known for blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi (dorado), yellowfin tuna, roosterfish, wahoo, snapper, and giant jack crevalle. The deep Pacific waters offshore create an incredible fishery where trophy fish can show up at any moment — and on this trip, they definitely did.
This was hands down the biggest fish any of us had ever caught and a story we will probably still be telling 20 years from now.
If you love fishing adventures, giant fish, epic battles, and grown men questioning their life choices while being dragged around the Pacific Ocean… this one’s for you.
