With a golfing tradition dating back to 1989—the year the Marina Vallarta Golf Club, an 18-hole course designed by renowned American architect Joe Finger, was inaugurated—Puerto Vallarta has established itself as one of the destinations with the best golf courses in Mexico.

This is confirmed by GolfPass, a renowned specialized website that publishes the 25 Best Public Golf Courses in Mexico at the beginning of each year. Its annual lists are based on golfers’ preferences, selecting reviews from regular players, weighting the most recent reviews, and combining them with the averages of each course’s subcategories.

This year, the golf courses at Club Vista Vallarta, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jack Nicklaus, rank third and fourth, respectively. The Weiskopf course is distinguished by having the longest hole in the bay, a beautiful lake, and lush vegetation. The Nicklaus is a signature course, meaning it was personally designed by one of the world’s most renowned designers, known for his extremely challenging courses for any player.

Both courses boast ocean views with the Sierra Madre mountains as a backdrop. Nestled amidst nature, the only sound accompanying players is birdsong, fostering deep concentration.

In fifth place is the Vidanta Vallarta Golf Course, whose 18 holes are surrounded by the Ameca River and mangroves. Designed by Greg Norman, it stands out for its paspalum grass and Sierra Madre views. This course has hosted the Mexico Open since the spring of 2022—an official PGA Tour event that attracts top-level players—establishing itself as a world-class venue for the sport.

Despite its age, the Marina Vallarta golf course remains a favorite among players, who, with their positive reviews, placed it eighteenth in the ranking. Recently renovated, this urban course boasts unique features, including beautiful lakes, an oceanfront hole, and a pond bordering the estuary, all nestled within one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic luxury residential communities.

Other courses located in the Puerto Vallarta metropolitan area also appear on the list: El Tigre Golf & Country Club at number 13, Higuera Golf Club at number 15, and The Nayar Course at Vidanta at number 17.
