30 Years Tequila Quality Regulatory Council. Established on May 17, 1994 as a non-profit organization, the Tequila Regulatory Council A.C. (CRT) is a civil organization that brings together the actors of the Agave Tequila chain, such as: agave producers, tequila producers, bottlers, distributors, marketers and government agencies.

Appellation of origin

We understand Denomination of Origin to be the name of a geographical region of the country that serves to designate a product originating from it, and whose quality or characteristics are due exclusively to the geographical environment.

The Denomination of Origin of Tequila (DOT) is a badge that guarantees the quality and authenticity of this emblematic Mexican drink. This recognition represents a history, a legacy produced under certain standards in a differentiated and delimited region, thus reflecting the unique characteristics of Tequila, its people and its roots in our land.

THE DOT IS PROTECTED AND REGULATED BY RULES AND LEGISLATION SUCH AS THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW IN ITS ARTICLE 156, WHICH DETERMINE THE SPECIFIC GEOGRAPHICAL AREA WHERE TEQUILA CAN BE PRODUCED. THESE AREAS ARE LOCATED IN 181 MUNICIPALITIES DISTRIBUTED IN 5 STATES OF MEXICO, WHICH ARE: JALISCO, MICHOACÁN, GUANAJUATO, NAYARIT AND TAMAULIPAS, UNIQUE TERRITORIES LEGALLY RECOGNIZED FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TEQUILA.

The Agave tequilana Weber blue variety (blue agave) is the only species allowed for the production of Tequila.

The Denomination of Origin of Tequila was established – due to its suitability for cultivating blue agave, its history and the traditional production processes to produce the drink – in the states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Tamaulipas, where the geographical conditions, climatic and soil conditions are optimal.
